We tore the engine apart today and found:

Nothing Wrong

So what is up? No signs of blow by, rings were free piston walls clean and no marks. Cylinder walls perfect. Heads perfect. So where is the oil going? Remember a quart every 200 miles. Can that much oil be blown out the breather hose and evaporated by turbo heat? I did use Sea Foam the last 150 miles of the year. I don't know if that had any effect on things and the cleanliness of the pistons and the cylinders.
Any way the rods and pistons are in. Any thoughts on where the oil is going?

I still think you had blow by. Plus you said you had oil comming out of your breather. That motor wasn't desinged to run on Boost. You need to get a evac sytem like teh LP one and open up your crank case vents!!!!

Inadequate evacuation breathers?

Nothing was wrong with mine either. I think my oil use was do to to much oil pressure at the turbo.

with the use of the seafoam it probably claned out the rings and if you had continued running it the oil consumpsion may have been gone . have used it as a greese romover and it is very good .

Buckeye, mine pushes oil past seals in turbo and then burns it, but not nearly a quart every 200, more likly a quart every 1500kms, eveidence of this can be found in my charge tubes and breather foam

I still think its the synthetic blowing by the rings. Yamaha does not recomend use of synthetic oil in these motors.

Mine did not look like that. I did not have the signs of blow by past the first ring.

No, mine look alot better. I'll have to take some pictures.

The motor those pistons came out of was broken in by the book, and always used oil. About 5000 miles on it now, 3000 of them with turbo.

EX. Valve guilds?

This is where I'd be looking VERY closely. I know that on bikes, these are the usual culprits when oil burning is a problem (I'm refering to non-turbos of course). Now that your engine is apart, there's no way I'd re-assemble without replacing all the valve seals (they're pretty cheap too)

buckeye lakercr did you perform a leak down test before tear down and what were your numbers yamaha has change the rings on o5 models
