Rering job on an 03 RX-1

I am getting ready to change the piston rings on my 03 RX-1 to the 05 rings. I want to eliminate the excessive oil consumption problem. Since there are so many engine builders on this forum, I am hoping I could get your advice. Two questions:
1. the engine has 6000 miles on it. Will I need to hone the cylinders as part of this rebuild in oreder to get them to seat properly. If so, I understand the nikasil coating is very hard so can you reccomend the source of the correct hone also
2. Will the 2005 piston rings work on the 2003 pistons?. According to the parts listing, it appears Yamaha updated the pistons also.

Have you tried Seafoaming the engine??

I've had the same amount of oil consumption since the first ride, about 800 miles per quart of oil. I did try the seafoam treatment, the Yamaha ring-free treatment, no change at all. I'd be happy with 1500 - 2000 miles per quart. Some people on this site, particularly those with 2005 and newer models claim they see no oil consumption. I bought most of the parts to rering the engine, I might wait until next spring to do this work, getting too close to the riding season.

My 03 used about 1 quart in 500-800miles did from day one...... That was one thing i HATED!!

I used a qt every 400 miles.

Hello Jim,

If you want to pull the motor and bring it down We can turn it around in a few days, I am currently reassembling mine out of my race sled, We honed the block and are replacing Pistons rings and gaskets because that is all it needed, I am using 2005-10 Pistons and rings for better Oil control.

Ted...I pulled mine yesterday and will bring it down Monday or Tuesday.
It will be interesting to see what she looks like once cracked open.
