I have an 07 apex er i seem to bottom out quite a bit. Should i revalve the shock or go with a stiffer spring? if so which spring should i go with? I am 225# and an aggressive rider

IMO, if you can set the preload to within specs with all of your riding gear on you do not need a stiffer spring.
I weigh 200# and the Carver re-valve with my stock spring works great. Mike Carver warned me about going to a stiffer spring if you do not need it because it will make the sled ride too harsh on the small bumps.

I'm with Blue Dave. To expand just a little, the stiffer spring WILL require a revalve. The standard valving will no longer handle the rebound requirements.

so i can keep the same stock spring and just re-valve? what is the cost of a re-valve??

im also 225# without gear, Ive got an 06 gt, i spoke to bruce at pioneer and told him I was an aggresive rider and rode tug hill area alot, he went with the 6.5 spring and revalve, I rode it a few times in smooth conditions and thought the 6.5 was a overkill as it rode stiff, made some adjustments and after riding the last few days in rough conditions up on the hill the sled performed awesome, I used the EC from soft to middle depending on conditions and she used up all the travel and didnt bottom even on some horrendous holes with the flipper pinned, I have my preload set at 45mm (soft) and my shock at nearly max rebound dampening so IMO a little lighter spring with the proper revalve would be perfect. Ive been playing with my set up for weeks so if u have any further questions PM me. Hope this helps.

I allso had my shock revalved with a 6.5 spring. I am 200 lbs, it seems very rough, it never bottoms. But my ride hieght seems high and it seems a little tippy.
Thr ride is perfect with my girlfriend on the back, she's 105 lbs. This is with the spring on the softest setting
Is there such thing as a 5.5 spring?

Trust me, unless you weigh more than about 250# you will be fine with the stock spring and a re-valve. I am 200# (without gear) and I can now ride my sled WFO sitting down over the nastiest crap you can imagine and it rarely bottoms out and never kicks back anymore.
With the EC set at full soft it still rides nice and plush over the small to medium bumps. I rarely need to go much above half way on the EC. The re-valve also makes the EC seem more effective as well.
I got my rear Ohlins EC shock rebuilt (needed some seals) and re-valved at Carver Performance for just under $100. This is the best 100 bucks you can spend on your sled IMO.
This is how Yamaha should have delivered the sled. Shame on them for getting the valving so wrong from the factory.

1xr, try backing your preload to nearly minimum, i set my spring length at 285mm(believe max is 287mm) when hanging, this may take u out of the recommended set in (40-45mm) slightly but you will notice a softer ride.

Stock spring with a re-valve will be all you need imo!

You have to check your SAG 1st then determine if your actual spring is the right 1 or not, with proper sag, cam adjustment (1 to 7) and "C" clip settings (1-2-3 position) your spring shouldn't compress anymore than 10.4" of installed lenght or it will BIND and cause serious damage! I highly reccomend you get your shock serviced and revalved to your riding weight and style...when was your shock service the last time and how much milage do you have on it...it should be done every 5000kms/3000miles as a rule of thumb and depending on how hard its riden, don't forget a MONO suspension only has 1 shock doing all the work! here's instructions on how to check your SAG...

rear shock
We only have less than 2000 miles on our '06 apex gt's, but decided due to their age we should get the shocks serviced. We had been bottoming, sometimes harshly, before the rebuild (with the ride height/shock length set correctly). We decided to go with Hygear's dual rate spring package (rear only) and sport level revalve (after talking to Hygear). So far we are impressed with the ride, but we haven't bottomed at all yet, even on some trashed trails last weekend after 1-2 ft of fresh lake effect. And that is with the EC set to full soft. So I'm going to back the rear spring preload off a turn or two and go try it again. We're after as plush of a ride as possible on ripples/stutter bumps without a lot of harsh bottoming on moguls.

Yes , There is a spring 5.5 The factory shock is 4.9lb I am 200lbs and this spring worked great for me. Had revavle done at same time. This was Bruces advise from PP. Mine was like you described about your sled. Just was BAD! Much better now.
