I have an 03 RX 1 with 1800 miles on it. When I put it into reverse, I have to hold it to the left side of the sled to get it to stay in reverse and that its good for getting it off the trailer only. Once on the trail, all you hear is grinding. I've adjusted the rod per the manual and ready to open up the chain case. Is this typically a bent fork or gear cog wear? How long should this repair take? Anything else that needs to be done while in the chain case?

I'd suspect a bent fork if you have to hold the handle over.
Does that mean that the handle won't slide far enough over to slip into the "R" position, or that it wants to keep popping out?
Does it work fine in forward or does it spin gears? If you get a rattle out of the chaincase (not the normal gear reduction rattle), the chain may not have enough tension. Check that while you've got it apart.

Need to hold it in place and it hits the cowling. I guess its time to open it up in the spring.

Might just need to be adjusted

It is fine in Forward. How long should it take to replace the shift fork/gear? Nothing complicated?

you probably just need to adjust your conecting arms a little bit. i have had to do this on 2 machines this year. opened the chain case just to make sure everything was good and it was fine.
