square either plastic or alum ...and of course steel is always more reliable than round...especially when the stud is over 1.250...
tall nuts will help a lot..
if properly installed with enough quantity for power etc..plastic is a nice way to save weight..

I like the square alum backers. Easy for me to turn the track and look for the backer that is turned, that way I know it needs to be tightened. When they get loose they turn. Never had a problem yet with 2400 miles. Have only retightened 3 or 4 in total all last winter.
