RS Venture Towed with a 600 2-stroke Venture

My 2005 RS Venture broke down yesterday, on my first trip of the year. It was not charging, and after 10 miles the battery was dead and the engine would not run. My old 1999 600 Venture was near-by with a dead battery and worked fine. Actually pulled the RS venture back home.

Problem was traced to a bad connection on the output of the rectifier/regulator assembly. It was damaged from over-heating. I replaced the plug, cleaned up the terminals and it now charges fine.

When I started it for the first time I had to boost it with my ATV. It took around 30 to 40 seconds of cranking to fire up. When it started, the charging system was probably over-loaded with two partially drained batteries connected to the RS Venture. I think this is when the damage occurred to the connection.

A well drained battery can demand a high charging current, which can deteriorate any loose connections in the charging system.

I added an Optimate III charger and made a longer cord from the charger to the connector that would be on the sled. That way I can keep the Optimate III out of the elements and keep the battery charged at all times.

I talked to a tech at Optimate and he said you don't want to expose the charger to rain/snow, and lengthening the cord would have no effect on the charge sensor.
 
Sounds like a real bad day. Not to preach but battery care is essential. Keep them charged all year long and don't let them run down so much. Boost charging although capable on anything isn't necessarily risk free as you found out. All of the components (diodes, etc) are much smaller then automotive ones hence can burn up much easier. BTW it isn't terribly difficult to burn up voltage regulators on a car either. Been done many , many times.

Had exactly same problem with my vk pro and had to replace the connector and regulator.
