This might be a known issue to you, but I have only one experience racing against a -03 RX. We were neck and neck in top speed, he had me in the hole shot though with his better traction. But I did expect more out of that mighty 4-stroke. I´ve ran my Vmax4 182 kmh ( GPS ). That is all what she gets out on top speed wise. I´m all stock.
V4 is a decade old , but still runs great. Suspension isn´t uptodate, that is clear to me too, but I do still love my old Max.
I´m asking this ´cause a friend of mine is thinking of buying a used RX. He´s allready telling me how he is going to spank my behind on the lake. I know I´ll be eating his snowdust in the bumpy trails. And I don´t even wanna go comparing fuel milage LOL I know my next sled will be a 4-stroke Yamaha. You can´t go wrong with that.

Hey them 4's move and sound so sweet. From what I read the RX-1 tops out from 105 to 120. Depends on setup. I can get 105 from my stock 05 Warrior and I weigh over 300pds.
Sound like it will be a close race. Now when you buy your new Appex!

Well, that GPS reading was on really hard pack snow on REALLY flat lake. All out for 1 km LOL !!
I must admit that RX had killer midrange, but not that much more than my Vmax4. It depends about setup I think. And traction too. My stock year 1996 track is not anything compared to the new RipSaw.
Got to love the sound of the 4-stroke too. I think RX and Vmax4 800 are pretty close in performance, I you look at the weights and HP. 800 has 150 hp, ´06 RX ( Apex ) too. Older RX are just under that. My V4 weighs 262kg ( 577 pound ) DRY, RX is close too.
I´m close to 100 kg with my riding gear ( 220 pound )

Is there a "fast" year fro the V4?
I have seen quite a few on the lakes....I have been beating them for years.....700sx....700srx....and RX1. Not even close.
I have never ran against a red one which I think is 1996. Are they the fast ones?

I think the Apex will leave you Vmax-4 in the snowdust. Its just got too much power.
I never really thought that Vmax4s were all that fast. My father had a '92 Polaris 650 RXL and back in the days when the RXLs were new he used to smoke Vmax4s all day long. They would beat him off the line and up to 600 ft, but by 1000 ft his RXL could catch them and start to pull away.
Ive heard that Yamaha detuned the Vmax4s for production because they found that they were downright dangerous for people that werent used to them.
Ive seen a few Vmax4s that were setup for drag racing and they were pretty insane. A few years ago the snowmobile club I beloned to at the time (Bo-Boens of St. Germain, WI) had their yearly picinic/swap meet and there was a top fuel drag sled there that had 4 Vmax4 engines on it that ran on alchohol. It had no mufflers, just open exhaust and that thing AT IDLE was literally deafening! Id like to have a Vmax4 someday, but it seems like they are starting to become pretty hard to come by (much like a lot of 2-stroke Yamahas). It seems like a lot of people who like their old 2-stroke Yammies and have no interest in the new 4-strokes are snatching up the good used sleds as quickly as they can.

Although the motors sound great, in stock trim IMO vm4 wasnt all that impressive. Ive got a buddy with close to $20K tied up between Hauck and Bender in his VM4 and it still cant touch a ck3 mach z in average conditions, and he takes alot of flack too..lol. With that said we've all seen what they can do when theyre in the right hands. I hope Yamaha learned some lessons with that machine.

Man i jus dont understand why some of you guys think the old v-max 4 800 95-97 were slow, hell they dynoed in the 150 hp range all day, when i had my 95 zrt 800 that we raced isr legal w/heads cut to spec isr spec it made 154 hp and would not beat all 95-97 vmaxs we raced and it was fast, than my 99 xcr 800 could not beat all zrts or vmaxs and when the 98 srx came out it was 138-142 hp it would not beat all v max 4s either,if 182 was on gps that is 114 mph roughly and is where most all rx1s run and zrts xcr 800s and v-max 800 and alot of srxs too... so captin if you dad had a rxl fuley that was all stock,(single pipe) 102 hp beating these sleds,he had the fastest one around, cause i had the same sleds in that day and unless you chiped and piped them no way was you going to be any where near them.

Im with mmsnowbeast regarding the rxl. I owned one of those things, it ran ok for its day but it wasnt going to beat anything in the 750/800cc range, even the 700 wildcat smoked it! The carburated 650 was a much better machine IMO.

the vm4 with the right pipes and mild head work will clear 180 horse easy.

I always liked them vmax-4s. I was going to scoop one up after my vmax 600, but got a little worried about fuel range with the smallish fuel tank and 4 carburetors. Ended up getting the mach Z instead and back on yamaha when the SRX came out.
Heard a vmax-4 with a turbo and was the sweetest sounding sled I ever heard.

You'll get better milage with a Vmax-4 than the vmax 600 or even exciter. But these were stock machines.

His was stock other than he had the clutch setup a little bit different than stock (I dont recall exactly what it had in it) and I clearly remember him beating Vmax4s. I know that RXL was fast and he raced a lot of sleds with it and he didnt lose very often. You have to realize too, back in those days my father was only about 170 pounds, so its not like he was a big guy. Take it for what its worth, Id still take a Vmax4 over an RXL any day. Try getting EFI parts for any of the fuel-injected Poos of that era (good luck!)mnmsnowbeast said:so captin if you dad had a rxl fuley that was all stock,(single pipe) 102 hp beating these sleds,he had the fastest one around, cause i had the same sleds in that day and unless you chiped and piped them no way was you going to be any where near them.
Thats why Id like to find myself an old Vmax4 that isnt all used-up. Id like to see for myself if they are fast or not.

A stock well set up Vmax 4 with some real slight tweaking(thicker base gasket & cut heads) will stomp the crap out of a good running SRX or RX-1. Been der dun dat.

There was something different about the sound of that Vmax-4. When I first rode my SRX it didn't seem the same as my old max.
