RX-1 ER monoshock - wheels?

Hey whats up everyone.

I have a 2005 RX-1 ER and want to change out all my wheels before this riding season. Last year my rails cracked and I think its because of the inside wheels the sled came with. Apparently this shop up in northern Maine (where my sled originated from) swaps out the stock wheels on RX-1's with larger polaris wheels. I think I read that a part of the wheel mounting bracket needs to be shaved to make the larger wheel sit where the smaller wheel would have. If you dont modify the bracket the larger wheel will "sit low" and take a beating, therefore cracking the rails near the wheel bolt. Well this happened to me last year and I had to replace my rails.

I wanted to get peoples opinions on what wheels/wheel combos I should go with. I would like to go with wheels with the replaceable bearings but mostly I want to go for STRENGTH and longevity. I want to get the best wheels on there that wont beat on my track or rails.

Thanks everyone I look forward to what you have to say.

1st of all you should have the REINFORCEMENT brace update they had from '06 up which you don't seem to have...I wouldn't oversize the rear inner's 'cuz of stressing rails...these take alot of abuse! here's a ongoing thread on IDLERS, check out 2nd page I have my sled set up with YAM idlers w/replaceable bearings "6205" and work #1, on the rear inners you have to machine mounts in order for them to align between track cogs when using "6205" bearings.

Thanks man.

I actually installed the brace after the fact. I was new to RX-1's and didnt learn about the issue until it was too late.

I will check out the thread on idlers.

Thanks for the info

Anyone else want to chime in?

Also by the dimples that appear to be on your rubber bump stops, looks like you had some bottoming out. Which isnt good either. Maybe in need of a rear shock rebuild/revalve?

Another issue with '05 is that they came without ZERK'S to grease all bushings, I noticed in your pic on front PIVOT at rails you should have some, you should have 7 in total, they also had a UPGRADE on front upper pivot arm bushing & spindle, they originaly came with a WHITE bushing w/aluminum spindle that didn't last more than 2000kms +/- I know I owned one...

I would also look in upgrading your front pivot arm on your rear suspension they tend to snap fairly easy when driven HARD.

Your "RA" cable, the dial on the side of the tunnel their was a UPDATE on that to, kind of a guard that bolts on your front pivot arm to protect from ICE hitting it and braking.

Sorry, not trying to discourage you, just giving a heads up. ;)!

apltx08, I appreciate all the info, it is very helpful. Im assuming these "upgrades" are at the owners expense unlike a recall correct?

How would I know where to add the zerks?

thanks

Oh ya. They are at the owners expense. I had the front arm snap on my 05 and that cost me over $300. Once I got the grease zerks in, the newer wheels, and the front arm upgraded. I loved my 05. It rode great and was very reliable.

Take a look at pics, they can be added fairly easy...

For the updates it all depends how your local YAM dealer feels on that day..he could probably help you out somewhat...I've herd good things from different situation with YAM picking up some of the tab! specialy in these tougher times, I'd speak to your dealer about these issue's, you have nothing to lose.

Good Luck ;)!

Hey shanks, what "newer" wheels did you go with and do you have a link or part number for the upgraded front arm?

Anyplace sell aftermarket w-arms? I know I saw a powdercoating company on here that reinforces them but I wonder if I can buy an aftermarket one that would be cheaper than yamaha oem.

thanks for all the input guys! I want to do what I can now so Im not shopping for parts when my buddies are riding.

do u have a part #

Got it. The part number is 8FU-0S187-KT-00. It was $153.91. This was for a 2005 RX-1ER. Not sure if the part number is the same for other models.

Hope this helps
