I have a freind whos 2003 RX-1 is overheating it lost most of the coolant over the summer (leaking somewhere) so he refilled it and having issue getting the air out of the coolant system. I told him to rise the rear of the sled up higher than the front and open the bleed screw on the rear and purge the air after doing that it seems to be better but now he thinks that he found his coolant leak he thinks its the head gasket leaking (bringing to me tommorrow to let me have a look. My question is that a common problem? and how big of a job is it to do a head gasket in a 2003 RX-1?

My 04 sprung a leak and it was the hose coming right off the water pump front left part of the engine at the very bottom.

If ihe lost his coolant over the summer when he wasn't running it I don't think it's a head gasket. If he is using coolant and tge head gasket is gone it is either getting burned or you should be able to see it in tge oil

He brought the sled over yesterday for me to take a look at and what I found was the front heat exchanger got damaged from when his W-arm broken at the end of last season he put a differnt suspension on it this winter but thought that the damage was just a bulkhead and not a heat exchanger. The steam or smoke he was seeing coming out around his head gasket area is coming from his exhaust donuts. Told him he could maybe have heat exchanger welded up and needs to replaced the exhaust donuts.

Good you found it. Hate to see a good sled go down.
