Looking for some advice. I am heading out to Dubois, Wyoming in Mid february, and I am wondering if i should leave my shorty at home and rent a mountain sled or bring it? anybody really climbed with one of these? Last time i was out west I had an SX 700, which was a good jumper, but didn't climb real well. To be honest, I don't really like jumping my RX-1, it just doesn't feel right. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Short Track in the West

I just read an article in one of this months snowmobile mags that test all four manufacturers crossover sleds. The article tests the Rx-1 Warrior in the mountains, and they said very kindly that it doesn't work. I also read another magazine that described a stock RX-1M as best to stay on the trails. To put it bluntly the short track RX-1 won't go 10 ft of the trail in deep snow without getting stuck. Never mind going up a hill!

Yamadave, I'm headed for Dubois myself on the 18th of Feb. I have always said that if I have my own sled I would not pay $85.00 or more per day to rent, unless I was flying. I think the shorty would do just fine out there as long as you know in the beginning that you are NOT going to be dowing any high marking. My son-in-law took a 500 Indy trail out there 2 years ago and had a blast. Just remember that the sled is heavy and is hard to dig out if stuck, but if the snow conditions are right, you can go anywhere.

I grew up in Pinedale and rode to Dubois all time with my parents. In order to have the full experience of the mountains and the incredible riding I would spend the money and rent something with a 144" track or larger. The short track will work great on the trail but that country isn't about trails, it about making your own tracks and getting on top of some mountains. If you have not been there before take a camera because it is very bueatiful. Right now that area is getting hammered with snow, in the Green River lakes area they have 2 1/2 ft of new snow and it is still snowing. I spoke to my DAD this mornig and he told me this.
My family has a rental dealership in Pinedale Wyoming, if you are interested call Randy or Tiger at (307)367-4329 and tell them that Mike told you to call and they will fix you up with a Mountain Sled.

I will be ridding Feb 13th to Feb 16th in that area maybe we can get together 1 day and I will show you some fun areas?

I was out there a couple of years ago with my Vmax700 shorty, there were 8 of us on a variety of sleds. We rode in the area you are going to and I spent a lot of time off trail. I could highmark although not as high as the mountain sleds. It was good enough to get a real rush. I did come down upside down in the deep powder a couple of times with no real damage other than having to put the windshield back on(you have to be sure you have enough speed to make the turn back down). When you get stuck (and you will) its a b**ch to get out (not much air up there).

I will do it again and take my flat landers sled. I was reserved to go out in 2 weeks but had to cancel due to buisness conflicts. Can't wait to get out there again.

Thanks for the input. I found a MM700 I can rent for a week for $500. I think I am going to go that route. Can't wait.
