RX carb cleaning

According to the Tech Manual, you can use the pilot screws to richen or lean the idle fuel mixture. I think I'll give the pilot screws a few adjustments and see what happens.

Turning the screw out richens the mixture and turning them in leans it. I may hook up the Carb Sync Manometer and see how adjusting the screws affects things.

Larger Pilot Jets could increase the low range fuel mixture. Actually, the Tech Manual refers to increasing the Pilot Jet size "for higher elevations," when Idle speed performance is degraded. So, ... depending on elevation, increasing the size of the pilot jets could be a good thing. I guess increasing the Pilot Jet size is another way to change low range mixture. Now the question comes, to eliminate a slight hesitation at idle to WOT, which way do you go? Increase Pilot Jet size or turn out Pilot Screws. The cheaper way is to use the screws. They are both a bugger to get at.

Also, some guys put the bigger Pilot Jets in to decrease the probability of Pilot Jet plugging. But, ... from what I saw last night, It takes a lot more size than one size up to stop plugging. Last night, one of the Main Jets plugged, along with a Pilot jet. So, I have little confidence in the size increase in a Pilot Jet actually preventing plugging.

O.K. ... So it is the Tee on the carb vent line. If you have fuel coming out there, your needle valve (Item #10) may be stuck open. May be time to clean the carbs.

What other symptoms got you to looking?

Well, I think it's time to clean the carbs Len ;)!

Intially, I fired it up, smelled gas big time and saw a puddle forming on the ground under the sub frame. Wouldn't stay running unless I gave it throttle. Sounded aweful. Didn't have time to investigate.

Later, opened the hood and actually saw gas spewing from that T and found gas in the air box in front of left carb.

I'm thinking about dropping it off at the local service guy. You say an hour for a full cleaning job but he'll probably say 3. I definately don't mind contributing to the local economy but I don't want to screwed over either.

I would, its not that bad of a job. And like someone else on this site once said "GET TO KNOW YOUR SLED". The first time you do it it will problty take you about 3 hrs.
