Raise up the rear end, carefully drop the rear 1/2 of the suspension and you should be able to remove the shield.

This cover will brake sooner or later. Yamaha had this cover removed from '05 model year and on all newer sleds. It fell apart on my '03, I had my dealer remove it.

Reading Sept 06 issue of SnowTech in the 'home office' just now and came across the following tech notice....
"RX-1 Rattles"
Owners of 2003 and 2004 RX-1 (and RX-Warrior) models might experience a rattling or vibrating noise at certain engine RPM levels. These models were fitted with three metal exhaust shields that are not found on the 2005 models. There are 2 on the lower front and one at the lower rear of the exhuast system. Accoriding to Yamaha, these shields may vibrate at certain engine RPM levels and cause a rattling or buzzing sound. All three of these shields can be permanently taken off by removing the attachment rivets that hold them in place. 2005 RX-1's have the shields removed, for this reason, along with a slight weight reduction.

I have an 04 Warrior and I removed my heat shields last year. At the end of the riding season there was another rattle underneath and it ended up being one of the exhaust donuts in the flex pipes coming off the head pipes.
A little more difficult to replace and about $10 each. I replaced all 4, you might as well while your in there!
