Seat heater repair

Below is according to Cat service manual. Should be same as Yamaha.

"Seat heater elements cannot be tested."
To do a resistance test:
1. Disconnect the main harness/element connector.
2. Connect one ohmmeter lead to the red/black main harness wire; then connect the other ohmmeter lead to the green/red main harness wire. The meter must read the following, plus or minus 5%:
Lo = 4.32k ohms
Hi = 3.75k ohms
Note: If resistance is not within specification, troubleshoot the switch connector located under the steering support plastic panel. If the switch connector tests good, replace the switch.
To test voltage:
1. Disconnect the main harness/element connector.
Note: For this procedure, test the main harness side of the connector, NOT the element side of the connector.
2. Connect one ohmmeter lead to the red/black main harness wire; then connect the other meter lead to the black main harness wire.
3. Start the engine. The meter must read 12-15 volts.
Note: If this voltage test does not read within specification, troubleshoot the main harness, F-2 fuse, K-2 relay, or the F-7 main fuse.

Thanks for this.

My fathers seat element was toast. I purchased a replacement from Royal Distributing for $96 tax in. Its a nice unit, comes with everything you need and the element appears to be tougher than OEM. It also has a connection for heated clothing. I'd recommend it for those that need a new seat element.

Can the oem switch be used (ho /low)
Mine has been broke since the first season I bought the sled
The element is either on or off, it doesn't have hi or lo which to me doesn't matter as on my seat low gets too hot anyway.

I suppose you could use the stock switch on the hi setting. I'm going to use the stock wires feeding the stock switch and tie into the new switch as I don't want to hack into the new seat element wiring. If your familiar with the gears heated riding clothing the wiring/connections are identical.
