So I took my secondary clutch off tonight to grease my bearings and I noticed there was some back and forth slop on the shaft. I was wondering if anyone else had this slop. I didn't measure it but I is between 1/8" to 1/4" of play. I raise the eyebrow because I can see where the belt alignment could be thown off if the secondary clutch moves. Does anyone else have this play in the secondary clutch or does it basically just self align when they engage.

That's normal. But if there is movement from grabbing the clutch and it moves left to right on the shaft, then you need new bushings.

Yammie uses a "floating" secondary....your shaft has splines and should have light coating of grease.
the theory is that it will self align under load. I have tried to lock it into place with O rings to gain efficiency but did not see any difference on the gun.
mine is now setup stock with the 'Play'.

That is what I thought the deal was there. I did apply a thin layer of grease to the shaft before reinstalling it too just for good measures.
I know this is a little different by one of my buddies has a Nytro FX 08 and he took his to a shop to get programmed, exhaust, clutch kits, air intake, and pretty much the works. Now the shop he took it too said his clutchs came out of alignment and they had to reshim his secondary. Would these Nytros be in the same boat as the Apexes and have these floating secondarys? I just don't know how the clutchs could come out of align from the factory if they are made to have 1/8"-1/4" of play.

the reason for the play is self alignemt because of the old day the motor will flex under power to day we do not have that the rubber they use it is harder and just about all the motors have torq llimiters to help keep it lined up. there is not speed to gain to lock it down but you can get it lined up perfect now, when i work on a race team we always lock them down, On all my sleds and friends I have them lock down but make sure it is aligned right

I have got mine locked with rubber shim for 1 full winter and got no speed gain but got better drive belt life....less black mark on my clutch.

I love these type of replies....no reason just a statement.lol
ran mine for several seasons with O ring,no issues and looks new still....worst that could happen is O ring comes apart and your back to stock floating secondary....no harm
but with several thousand miles Oring still looked new.
many ways to skin a cat

I like guys like you that come up with these fix's the cheap way why not fix it right and be done with it, and if your fix is the right way send it to Yamaha , I would like to know why you feel this is way to fix it and yamaha tech guys tell us to do this way.

Yammie will tell you to keep the float.
nothing cheap about this MOD....its not a fix,its for guys who want to remove the float and do it by running down to the corner for parts and not need to go however far to a dealer and order a shim. the thread was meant to be an option to going with dealer shims.
it works well, and no issues were found.....
so for someone to say DONT USE O rings with absolutely nothing to back that statement up just cracked me up. now people can try whatever they like, just saying that what i tried worked well.
funny,if i listened to what yammie techs have told me nothing would be right with my sled......and isnt it funny how after 4 yrs now the new sleds come with pretty much every fix we did back in 06 ourselves...if you want to wait for yammie to fix something youre gonna be waiting alongtime in most cases.

I couldn't agree more! Very good points....it amazes me how the more education some one has the less common sense they have?? I can't tell you how many engineer types PHD's I've met that were as dumb as a shoe box...just couldn't wrap their brain around normal common sense fixes for common problems! Hense the continued problems we see from Yamaha that are so simple to resolve!

I don't see anywhere that Dan claimed that 'this is the way to fix it' and that he was in the right vs. Yamaha.
Step back from the ledge darv. Dan is a good guy and merely offered a suggestion.

Honestly i never looked too deep into that 15mm....it was just what i saw in manual.
but it also gives a +- of 1.5mm i believe,so 15mm was where mine spec'd out when pushing it back tight,so i went with that and tighened her down with O ring.
