SHIPPING PARTS FROM CANADA

Things must have changed, because I ordered a boatload (prolly a grand worth) of stuff for my Mach Z in the early 2000's from both Royal and a Ski-doo dealer in Canada since the exchange rate at the time was about $.61/$1. Never had to pay any additional fees.

Shipping from US to Canada, we are only allowed $50 CAD before Customs starts charging. Mind you, this is depending on who gets a hold of your package at the border. I've been charged duties for a $65 package, another time, I got charged nothing for a $100+ package. There was some talk by the Gov't to up the limit to $200.

Shipping from Canada to the US, I believe you're allowed up to $200 US before they ding ya. UPS charges regardless of how much you owe or not. That's what they charge to "clear" customs on your behalf. CBC did a few stories on this:

Was it UPS?

Learned my lesson buying a used cover for what I thought was a good deal on ebay from the US. When it got to the door and the UPS driver informed me of the brokerage fees and whatever other charges I could have bought a new one here for another $10. Always specify Canada Post or USPS or don't buy!

I still don't understand why I can have somthing shipped in from china and not have to pay this "brokerage" fee but yet with Canada (NAFTA) we get charged extra fees.

That sounds crazy! :o|

I honestly don't remember. I could dig thru my email trash and see if I can find it tomorrow.

Ebay has taught me to stay away from UPS, even in the states. USPS is the only way. As for shipping TO Canada, you must specify that it's a gift. There is a list of items that are charged a specific export fee based on the item and value. Plus, there are xtra forms to fill out for UPS. A savvy distributor or dealer from Canada will know how to get around this.

Does that come into the US via USPS or UPS? Just curious, I've only had a couple things come from Asia over the years but can't recall the details. I don't remember being screwed over though. The biggest was a HD projector from www.diewiththemosttoys.com (very cool site name, though it's a bit long) that I think I paid some duties on for imported electronics, but it was reasonable and I don't recall being raped on brokerage fees.

well the carbon fibre for my wr250x all came from japan direct and i had no fees on it at all through usps (canada post) and it was $1000.00 us worth of carbon fibre. looks really good too.

United Parcel Service. They are a courrier service specifically for parcels.

The "gift" thing does not work and hasn't for a long time. Makes no difference at all. We're only allowed to import up to $50 CAD without incurring taxes. And then, it depends on the customs inspector that gets a hold of your package. I have had a package valued at $65 taxed but another at $130 go through without anything. It may depend on how busy they are. The Canadian government was also talking about upping this limit to $200 but as far as I know, it hasn't officially happened yet.

There are a lot of misconceptions about the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Although most North American produced goods are exempt from duties, they can still be taxed unless exempt or under the limit. Although inspectors are supposed to check the origin of the goods being imported, most don't. Technically, importing something from the US that was originally produced in China should have extra duties added along with the taxes.
