Shitty Weekend

The -30 F weekend started off friday when i unloaded the sled and i got a self diagnosis light blinking at me. It would pulse three times then shutoff and repeat again and again. After about 70 miles i thought it might be good to have it looked at before the weekend , so i didnt ruin that ride. At the dealer i found that it was signaling that the thumb warmer swithch was the cause, i figured that the extreem coled was the cause and it wasnt gonna hurt anything to ride, so we rode saturday, every thing was ok, sunday i went out 6 miles after a through warmup and the first 3 miles riding at 45 mph or so my father and we decided to punch the sled out against each other. After about 800 ft my sled seemed like it lost all power. I though at first that i probably cleaned out my belt, so i pulled over to swap it. When i opened the belt guard there was oil every where. I started looking around for the cause but couldnt find it, the revisoir shows that the oil is half way up the cross hatch so it didnt seem to lose much, the oil was isolated to around the primary drive and i attribute the loss of power to both clutched being covered in oil causing the belt to slip, the rpms seemed ok. So now its at the dealer awaiting the diagnosis tomorrow. hopefully it was just a chafed hose or a bad gasket not a hole in the case. i looked at my heelclickers to see if one exploded and went thru the case but i could only see the heels. worst case if there is a bad prob with the case my dealer told me id get a new complete motor or if the repairs are too long waiting for parts ill switch my stuff overe to a fresh sled. The sleds each have 1300 miles on them and both have heelclickers, ecp kits , and bender pipes. On the bright side the are wicked fast....or were for my sled. last year on an ice road with everything minus the ecp kits and the stock gearing which was one tooth higher i saw 125 mph on the speedo, this year running one tooth lower gearing as came stock on the warrior im seeing 130 mph and still climbing slowlyin 2-3 inches of snow, so the sled is definatly faster than last years cross country. low and mid range is awsome with the ecp kits . i'll reply tomorrow with the cause , my fingers are crossed the engine isnt a total loss :(

Hey cowboy, sorry to hear that, hopefully it is minor and can be fixed right away, where were you guys riding today, jackman,or rockwood, just guessing. Well keep in touch. Pete 8)

AHH some different than the last time you guys were up ther ha,with all that snow you were showing us,man i wish it was back,oh well other than cold temps,it seems like, late Nov. or early Dec. not half way thru Jan. hope it turns soon.

Well i found the problem. The dealer says i blew the valve cover gasket, he said luckily it blew towards the clutches, causing the loss in speed because if it blew towards the other side i might have ran it out of oil before i discovered anything had happened. Not that my dealer is an authority on performance parts, but he attributted the failure to my edp filters freezing up. I know that it was extreemely cold and i probably had alot of snow dust from following my dad over the weekend but could the filters freezing cause this or could it simply be attributed to the cold, i couldnt see how the filters could cause this and i am even running the prefilters and they had no ice on them? Anyways ill be up and ready to rid again this friday. I really have to hand it to my dealer, Dave up at jackman is a great guy to buy from. He has always taken us right in for any service and his prices and accomaditaing my needs and schedule is always top notch, he took the sled in sunday night and it ws fixed monday, he also replaced a whole shortblock in a 2002 mxzx 800 i had in under a week. Anyway plese add in if you have any info about the filters or any other cause to the valve cover gasket failing.

IMO it could definitely have been caused by your ECP CRANKCASE BREATHER filter freezing up (not the carb filters). Do you have a slit cut into the breather hose like the 04's do?

Definitely had to be from excessive crankcase pressure. I wonder if the hose could freeze up with that slit in it.

Dave was telling my about you and your dad and i got talking to travis about talking to u guys online. I stay right in one of daves houses right in his parking lot. Maybe if you stop by there soem weekend i'll be around.

Cowbot, did dave give you any #*$&@ for running ecp kit? Dave is becoming more and more of a stand up guy,but i remember when he use to run the old shop acrossed the river,he was not such a nice guy in the old days, but he has lost almost a whole person, and made plenty in the new shop,it must of changed his attidude!!

i hope you guys were saying good things about us :D

its an 04 so the crank case tube should already have the slit in it

YamahaRx-Warrior, im in moosehead every weekend there is snow so ill probably be spotted around the area

Dave was real good about the mods , hes been a great dealer and always tries hard to treat us right, but were fairly good customers, at least i think so, we buy two of the most expensive sleds and loads of aftermarket stuff every year religously, so i guess we kinda should, plus its such a short season the sleds gotta get fixed quick

Did you intall the finter lit yourself and how long did it take Or if jackman did it how much did they charge you. I want to get a set of them but will have to have them pu tthem on becuase I leave my sled right there all winter.

Also did they have to cut the breather hose when installing the crankcase vent filter. If they did they might of did away with the slice.

Maybe i'll see you up there soemtime or stopped on the trail i'll have to stop and meet you guys.

My cousin blew his rev 800 this weekend. They are going to put a new motor now becuase it was soemthing with defective seals on the crank.

He rode about 5 mile and wasted a weekend also.
