My girlfriend has a 02 viper and tuesday night we tried to go for a ride and it started run very poorly. :4STroke: So she got to ride my rx1 home and I was stuck with this piece of #$%&* , go figure? I got it home and did a compression test and had 130 psi in two cylinders and 105 in the other. So I took the head off and the one juge. The cylinder, piston and rings look good. Except there is a little carbon build up in the ring grooves. I think this is my problem. I am going to put the piston in carb dip over night and put it back together will all the same parts unless someone thinks otherwise?

DUDE! Put a new head gasket on it and put it back together. One cylinder is SUPPOSED to have lower compression on Viper.

Try new sparkplugs, clean the carbs, etc.

NEVER TAKE APART AN ENGINE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!
Tell your gf that LB said to give you a real good as*-whoopin' for doing something really dumb. :o| :o|

Not 25 PSI different. I would have yanked the head also. Plugs sure as hell are not going to help you with your compression problem...BBY

I know what i'm doing I'm a car mechanic by day. I can handle a two smoke engine.

Guys some Vipers have about 10 lbs compression difference while others have about 15-20. As long as your #1 cylinder (pto) has at least 105-110 it's fine. Also remember when you check the compression to do it with the throttle wide open. I have two Vipers here at the shop right now and one is 110,125,125 and the other is 115, 135, 135 and this one is notably stronger out in the field, both stock 03's.

Viper compression

I have over 9800 miles on my 02 viper and it still runs great. I had checked the compression after 1500 miles and found one cylinder to be much lower than the other Two. I don't remember the exact #'s. My dealer told me not to worry about it since it ran good. The only issue I really had is that around 8500 miles I had to change the reed valves because of a bad idle and no. For a sled with 9800 miles and runs awesome. Not like my 05 RX1 that is an overheating, Slow piece of SH$@@$!!!!. Don't mean to sound bitter but......

those psi numbers are nothing to worry about. i just did a compression check on mine last week and it came out 110, 127, 125. your pto side is supposed to be about 10% lower than center and mag. when you say it runs poorly, what do you mean? what is it doing? and i wouldn't consider a viper as a piece of #$%&* no matter how it is running. they are awesome sleds

You can bet on your Power Valves being the problem. I own 2 Vipers and I've found that 800 miles is tops for Power Valve cleaning and adjusting. It's dependant apon the type oil you use.
Also depdending on what position the valve or valves get stuck in makes the diagnostics different on seperate occasions. My SRX wasn't as finicky while burning cheaper oil. Don't figure !! :4STroke: Read the Emoticon. Good Luck, I hope it's the Power Valves whereas they are free to clean and adjust on the electric start models, and for non electric start models $35.00 will set you up with the battery harness for adjusting and testing.

I'm not calling a viper a piece of #$%&* I'm calling a sled that is running on 2 of 3 cylinders a peice of #$%&* My grilfriend has been kicking my #$%&* ever since she got than sled in 01. I had only a 670 ski-doo. I finnaly got a sled that will beat it this year. Now Mrs. Mouth has me working on the sled that has been killing me! I have the right to #$%&* on it now!

I'm sorry to say it's not the power valves, I have cleaned them a 100 times in the 8k miles she has put on the sled and that is the first thing I checked and it did not fix it.

Although Yamaha "Claims" its ok to have at 10% variance between the PTO hole vs. the 2 others, I still think its unacceptable to have a variance of 25 LBS. Look at it this way. 10% of 130 is 13. 130 less 13 is 117. And your at 105. Thats 21%. If it were mine, I would take a look inside. I see you mentioned there is cabon build up? Thats blow by and that could be an out of round piston or bad rings. Maybe clean everything up, put some new rings on, hone, break rings in (Seat) and check it again. If you get it in the mid teens your ok.

Can you be more specific on what the sled doing that prompted you to post this? even at 105 psi it should run ok, but as srxspec mentions above, there is noticible differences in his 2 vipers. The one with higher compression runs noticibly better. How does the head chamber look for the PTO hole?

Good luck...BBY

Things to check......easy things first

1-Throw in a new plug.

2-Check plug end cap and make sure it's not broken and is pushed down all the way on the spark plug.

3-Do a leak down test. It will show you better than a compression test if you have a hurt cylinder.

4-Clean carbs (main jets, pilot jets, double check all settings).

5-Check the wires that run to the coils, I've had several Vipers with higher miles come in only running on 2 cylinders and one of the wires running to the coils had shorted out after rubbing on the aluminum bracket which holds them.

6-Test the coils themselves. Using a ohm meter remove the spark plug wire cap, that should show 5k Ohms, the coil should be thru the end of the spark plug wire and to the wire 5.8-7.0k ohms, then check both wires(small).38-.46ohms.

7-The next step would be to start testing the stator and other electrical areas if it's not one of the above.
