Did mine three days ago. I read all the posts and the complaints were: broke the bolt, stripped the threads, and not compressed enough that they loosen down the road. I did some testing on the bench and ran into the same problems. I believe that the main reason is that on the assembly line, the install tool is a puller not a screwer. So I cut a few pieces of metal, brought them to my buddy and he welded them in 15 minutes. He also had a cordless impact that I borrowed, but a regular air impact works, set at 40 to 50 psi. Hopefully the photos show up. The parts are 3 pieces 3/4 X 6 flatbar, 2 fat 2 inch washers with 1/2 inch holes, 6 1/2 X 1/2 inch readyrod, 1/2 inch nut, finishing nail, and the 6mm bolt and alignment nut that come with the kit. Weld straight, the bolt onto the end of readyrod, and the alignment nut onto the washer. Make sure that the end of the alignment nut with the protrusion that goes into the Rivnut, is on the outside. Drill a hole through the readyrod so you can put a nail through to keep it from turning. Mark your socket with a line of tape so you can count three full turns after you've snugged everything up by hand. For the Rivnuts that came with the kit, I used a 25/64 drill bit after putting a socket over the end to keep from penetrating more than 3/4 of an inch. The only other problem I had, was lining up the four holes in the plastic with the rivet holes. You must widen them with a very coarse round file, or drill the hole bigger otherwise if they don't go in comfortably, you will wreck those aluminum threads. If the existing Phillips screws and washers are not big enough to provide support, get 6mm X 25mm black body screws with permanent washers(up to one inch wide) from the auto body supply store. Remember though, they give you Phillips screws so you don't mess up the aluminum threads, so don't overtighten bolts if you use them. This is still not perfect, next I am going to try longer inserts if I can get them... Now I have a question for you. Is 1/2 an inch of snow, enough to take the sled out?... Important update in the next few days.

I put my black skid plate on today.
Didn't go too bad. I used the same drill bit you used above.
The rivnuts fit in fine and once you used the expanding tool
they aren't going anywhere. Took about 1 hour. Everything matched
up perfectly.

skid plate rivnut install update
Update: drilled out my rivnuts that came with the kit which I believe are the 14.73 mm model. Use a 23/64 or 3/8 drill bit. Put a deep socket over it so it only penetrates 5/8 inch. Then I installed the 17.27 mm rivnut insert(same make AVK A-L series because they have to fit in the hole). You can order the 17.27 mm from McMaster-Carr(Chicago) part No. 94020A387 for a pack of 25 for $14.48 plus 4. shipping. Check the picture for the comparison. I used two pieces of metal, just like on the sled, I measured 5 mm thickness. The 2, and 2 1/4 in the picture is the number of turns using my tool. As you can see, the 14.73 rivnut in the middle doesn't seat worth beans, and it makes sense because the 14.73 is only rated for up to 4.2 mm thickness metal. I checked with a mirror and the 17.27's are seated perfectly. If you make the tool described earlier to install it, two full revolutions of the socket is good enough. If you handbomb it with the kit method, you'll have 25 rivnuts to practice on, to determine how many turns. Gitrdun.

I can figure it out. You guys come up with the correct way to install the skid, yet yamaha can't get it right. Whats their problem anyway, ah forget it I know, not one of them actually ever drove a sled before.
