Skid Removal

Hey Guys.
I did a search but could not find anything about the proaction skid.
I have loosened the track. Jacked the rear bumper. Removed all the bolts (6) that hold the skid to the chassis. I cant seem to fight it out of the track. Is there a trick to this?
The front top bracket that hold the straps and the top of the centre shock broke. I mean busted most of the welds. The centre shock shaft sheared clean off. I gotta take the skid out too see how i am going to fix this thing.
I was going easy. Not too fast over whoops. Thats when it fell apart. I removed the broken shock and was able to ride it home.

Here's the only thing that works for me. Put on a pair of gloves, grab it with both hands and shake the $... out of it. Wait til you try to get it back in. :o|
 
I find the best way to remove the rear suspension and then to put it back in is to have someone to help. One person handling the rear suspension and the other person moving the track out of the way. I also find it is best to lift the rear of the sled only enough to get the suspension out/in. If you lift it too much, you lose room and manuverability. Get a helper in order to keep your cool, take your time, don't get impatient.
 
Take the bolts out of the bottom of the weight transfer rods. Then it folds flat. Piece of cake.

And leave them out till after u get it bolted back in!!
 
When I put Yamaha rear suspensions back in I use a light duty ratchet strap. I put the hooks onto the suspension at both ends of the top (front) shock (on pro action) or on the both ends of the single shock (RA) If you look at it and figure out the points where it has to pivot you set the straps up tighten so the shock compresses 2 inches or so and every bolt ines up perfectly. Now getting the actual suspension into the track on any modle sucks.. but just wiggle.. pry.. wiggle some more. I find the easiest way is to do it with the sled on its side. Good luck.
 
ON installation. The bolts that I always have trouble with are the middle two, the shaft where FRA adjustment is. I use ratchet straps, pump jacks, blocking, pry bars, you name it... lol but just when your ready to give up it falls into place.

I slide the front out first upon removal and angle the rear in when installing.

If you do your own wrenching... all I can say is get used to this procedure! lol
 
I have done this a few times, with the mono skid mind you. The best part is when you fight and fight to get it back in and your arms and shoulders are at the point of muscular failure. And then it goes in! You roll onto your back on the dirty garage floor with your arms and legs flayed out with a big smile on your face as you look at the rafters. Just hope the wife doesn't walk in at that time and see whats going on. Women don't understand things like that.
 
I tried removing the back wheels and axle and that only helped a little, the rails still put up a good fight. What's the expression- trying to stuff 5 pounds of poo in a 4 pound bag?
 
make sure to put on your $hit kicking boots and have a large can of wd40. boots to kick the skid while you lay on your side. wd 40, spray the heck out of track and skid that touches it, it helps when trying to get it out and back in, plus the most important tool you will need besides a friend, is plenty of beer.
 
I asked my dealer friend how he does it and he says he removes the rear axle and wheels, giving him lots of room.
I've never done that, but it makes sense. I agree with everyone above, just push, wiggle, pull, and swear a lot. The wratchet straps and a big pry bar always work for me, but I always need help getting the last bolt in.
 
Have you done the suspension? I have done that in 10 minutes by taking those 2 bolts out.
 
Thanks for all the replies. I got really busy with work. All the snow is gone now, so Im not in a hurry lol. Im gonna give it a try tomorrow.

Got the skid pulled out today and all the bearings out. Took the bolts out like Ratpack said. Went well. Even by myself.
Once I had the skid out I noticed almost all the bushings throughout the skid had a lot of play in them. Going to replace all bearings, bushing, 2 new outside idlers, sliders, new front pivot bracket that broke and new front shock.
I originally was going to sell the machine after I had it snow worthy. I don't know if I will now, after all Im going to have a totally rebuilt skid. Plus I have become very intimate with the machine while working on it lol. We shall see.
