sled for 13 year old and 15 year old

I started all 3 of my kids on Vipers at the age of 12 two of them are still riding Vipers and my oldest daughter has an RX-1. Gotta watch out for some Phazers the brakes dont work very good.

Started 2 daughters on Indy Lite 340's at age 11. They are very low center of gravity and a very forgiving sled to ride. You can find them for under $2,000 and probably sell them for very close to what you paid with proper care.
The next step up was to a Ski Doo REV 380 Fan and 550 Fan. These sleds are SO light compared to liquid sleds (and Phazers). The oldest daughter was able to ride the Phazer safely (experience on other sleds and able to physically move and muscle the sled around) when she was 17. The Phazers do require a very active and physical riding style which is a blast for adults and older teens, but more than younger-smaller kids can handle when there is any speed involved. I sold one of the Phazers to a friend and his 12-year-old center-punched a tree shortly thereafter.

I would really advocate for a Polaris Indy chassis (later called the Edge). I own one and they are so easy to handle and are very stable. Mine is a 550 fan and it is peppy enough to keep up at speeds below 60 mph, but not fast enough to cause any problems. This fan model is very light too - I think mine only weighs 450 lbs. Nothing to go wrong on it either (except the two-stroke motor).
Very cheap and easy to work on too.

The earlier model 2 stroke engines were practically bullet proof imo ;)!

I just had mine rebuilt. The clutch side cylinder got ruined when one of the rings came apart and got thrown around inside the cylinder. New Wiseco pistons and rings, bored cylinders and $500 later, its like new. I heard some stories of the 550 Fuji fan having issues, but I have been reassured by several Polaris mechanics that they only had a few years with oil line issues and cylinder lining problems, neither of which affected the 2001 models.
Hope to get another 4-5000 miles out of it. I only ride it locally, so it only gets about 1,000 miles per year at the most (depending upon the snow here). As mentioned, it is the EASIEST sled to ride. Easy to steer, goes where you point it, rides well for a traditional sled, and very light. I bought it not only for me, but for my GF who has never ridden a snowmobile and her kids, who also have never ridden a sled.

I have riding since 1971 and my kid started at age 3 on a mini-z, he is now 16. I got him a 08 Phazer RTX and it was the worst buy ever. After three years of trying to get the thing to handle and him always wanting to ride my Nytro we traded it in on an Ski-Doo XP and what a huge improvement in everyway. I think the Phazer is the worst sled to start someone at any age out on. A Yamaha SX is a good one to start out with.
