In our riding group there are several Yamaha's mostly 06 or 07 Apex or Attacks. Ive seen a few times where people are parting out sleds and selling their ignition keys and assembly. This got me thinking, this might be a good (spare) part to put in the tool bag.
Being 300 miles from home and 50 miles (by Sled) away from the your truck and trailer is not a place you want to lose your sled keys.
Are the key assembly's universal between models? If I buy the whole assembly can it just plug into the harness, turn and go?
Waiting for snow in thinking too much

Why not just put the spare key in your tool bag??

The best approach to this is to learn the wiring at the switch in order to bypass in emergency. If you're going to the trouble of replacing the switch, you might as well just hotwire the thing.

I can't visualize this in my head a the moment, but I have my sled apart right now. Would this be as easy as disconnecting the wires from the ignition cylinder and touching them together? I just ordered a spare key from the stealership $16.95.....I have the switchblade original and they said that they have to call yamaha and order a spare....it won't be a fancy switchblade one, either. Can these keys just be cut at a hardware store? One dealership (not my regular one) asked me if they were programmed keys. I figured that they should know! If they aren't special programmed keys, why couldn't we get one cut at a local hardware store for $2?

I had 2 made at the locksmith and they work fine. One for the sled and the other is in my wallet.\\

I could do this for myself, just thinking about the 8-10 other Apex/Attacks I run with through out the year. The one guy who doesn’t have a spare in his tool kit is the one that is going to drop his in the snow....you know how that works.radianguy said:Why not just put the spare key in your tool bag??
Hot wiring would definitely be an option. The key assembly/receivers Ive seen look to have quick connects on the wires. If it just a matter of plugging it in then it would be worth it to not strip/cut wires until the spare key was retrieved.
