My favorite way to do it is 3 ratchet straps and a floor jack. It gets dicey but if you do it smartly, it works like a champion! Strap each side of the shock standing up to the base of the floor jack. Have someone stabilize it, then jack it up. It compresses the spring so you can pull the retainer right out. Then slowly bleed off pressure......slowly and keep your fingers out of there. Have fun.

I would go with two endless rachet straps. By doing this you can put a strap on each side and pull the spring down real easy and remove the top collar. Works with the Big Boy spring too. I tried about everything and this is by far the best way to go.
