I made my own setup just like the star for the xtx and it works great. much better ride. Much more weight transfer and better in deep snow. It is worth doing because the xtx ride is poor compared to the mono shock.

My concern with the star setup is I find with my weight the suspension is soft enough. I have awesome transfer now so I wonder how the Star setup will react to a heavy weight guy!

The only thing I notice is my sit in is low and the Star is supposed to help that but even with the lower sit in it does not bottom hard and rid quality is great for me.

I have installed one on a guys that he weighed 280lbs and yes it was soft for him so all we did is relocated the lower hole in the rear scissors on the skid back 1/2'' now its just right for him.

I'm not an engineer but it seems to me that the Star package is taking the stress off of one area and transferring to another. I don't know how there track record is but wonder if there have been stress cracks because of the way it is mounted or the way it operates.

personaly i think yamaha nailed it on this rear skid i love mine just the way it came out of the box.

Star suspension in an Apex XTX

I ran this all of last winter and it does soften up the suspension a lot. In stock form the Apex suspension does work well for wash board trails and larger bumps but, the ride is a little harsh. The sled does handle well at any speed you want to run in stock form or with the Star kit.

The center shock spring is too soft for the Star kit and one of two things need done: 1.) Buy a stiffer spring as Star recommends which, I did or 2.) Leave the stock progressive linkage in the skid and don't use this portion of the Star kit. Haven't tried this plan as yet.

At 180 pounds, I found that I bottom my suspension out more with the Star kit and have been running the torsion springs on medium or high. I had my shocks rebuilt and re-valved by Hygear this year. They told me twice now to leave the stock center shock linkage in the skid and just use the rear scissor parts. They also told me that the Star kit has no bearing on the valving they do on the skid shocks.
Will see how the shocks work this year and then plan to try putting the stock center shock linkage back in...one thing at a time.

Bottom line is the skid does ride much more plush, handles the same as stock and weight transfers/hooks up very well.

Iahacker, did you have Star Suspensions revalve your shocks or did you run the stock shocks with the Star kit? I just installed the kit and had them revalve my shocks for my weight, and added the stronger spring.

Yes I think it does to. If its to soft for bigger people just change it. Like I said in the other post I moved the bottom pivot point back a 1/2 inch make a big difference in spring weight, less leverage. If you leave in in the location where they have it it is for less weight. Then when you crank up the rear spring a click it seems to stiff. I also crank up the front all the way with stock linkage and I weigh 220lbs
