Big thing to remember on those fast trails around cochrane to hearst...gotta seal that helmet really well at visor, and balaclava is important to get positioned perfectly. Many times you can get a tiny wind area hitting a small part of face, and you wont really feel it. And then when you stop for the night, you will find that spot has bad frost bite. Face is a tricky spot as you dont always feel it.

For your body the best thing I bought was these:
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/men-s-misty-mountain-thermal-fleece-pants-0870554p.html#srp
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/men-s-misty-mountain-thermal-fleece-undershirt-0870550p.html#srp
Polar fleece thermal shirt & long-johns.
They made a world of difference.
With heated grips my hands don't bother me with good winter gloves. The neck/chin area is the only other part that I find needs attention, especially if it gets wet with condensation from your breath.

This thread is about up north big trail riding, not tight trails where you are working the sled.
Always love when guys say they dont care about looking cool when that has nothing to do with the real reasons most all of us run lows in tight systems. Might be getting old but we still ride hard.

i have
klim keweenaw parka
klim klimate bib
klim boots (older set with yamaha logo)
klim belaclava
klim gloves (looks similar to summit)
helmet is hjc modular about 5 years old with origional heated visor.
the only thing that has given me trouble is the gloves, and i do admit i am hard on them, and that was when riding a phazer rtx with hand gaurds at -25 at 100 kph. was reaching for the gauntlets when we stopped coming out of cocrane running down the power line. ended up putting on my cheapie mec mittens and was warm as toast after.

well the warmest suits are leather, but no on wears them anymore cause there heavy and not sure anyone offers them anymore.
as far as Klim goes you need to layer as the outer layer isn't much better than window screen, and I own a couple. You can buy other brands for half the price and are far superior, I know I'm going to get some *** flung at me for saying it.
You can't go wrong with FXR as there's lots of options and color.
I also have a Arctiva suit I bought in 2007, its super light and super warm and totally wind proof after years of use and the whole suit was less than half the price of the top brands , it just don't look as nice.
So shop around, pick one you like and don't get caught up in all the advertising and hype as the hype is often over rated.

i had a set of yamaha leathers before current set up and i was actually colder with them as they were always giving me drafts in awkward spots. gave them to my brother as he lost his set of them in a house fire last year. still run the 19 year old ckx leather bibs with a coldwave jacket at times.

I wore leather suits right from back in the 80,s and bought my last one in 2003 with my first RX1, in 2006 I bought a Yamaha Team suit by FXR and was so impressed with how light it was and warmth close to the leather one, so that was pretty much the end for wearing my leather one. when it hits below minus 30 though I still bring the leather one out if I have it along on a trip.

Buddy of mine also used to wear the Yamaha leathers, ended switching to Klim. Found it lighter and warmer. We were sledding at March break one time when it turned to rain. We kept sledding for two more days and those with FXR, Choko and there was another brand I don't remember all would come in soaking wet at the end of the day. The Klim suits were dry.

Dan, your right, I don't know whats worse that or frozen fingers. I've stopped countless times to make those adjustments, then finally whip out the duct tape, freeze my fingers in the process and tape the helmet like a mummy. Usually I have an old HJC neck curtain with extra layer of fabric but need to get a new one one.Big thing to remember on those fast trails around cochrane to hearst...gotta seal that helmet really well at visor, and balaclava is important to get positioned perfectly. Many times you can get a tiny wind area hitting a small part of face, and you wont really feel it. And then when you stop for the night, you will find that spot has bad frost bite. Add neck curtain to the list.

My friends make fun of me for wearing my 10+ year old Reima Yamaha jacket. It’s a great jacket super warm and dry. I just clean it really well every year. it still looks brand new. I’m surprised to hear so many negative things about Klim. I’ve had a set a Klim bibs for a couple of years now. They were very expensive even on sale and they’re a little bit too big but they’re the warmest thing I’ve ever had and you’re never wet. It actually takes getting used to dressing so lightly underneath of them.
I got a smoking deal on HMK team BOA boots years ago on eBay. They’re a little stiff and bulky like walking in snowboarding boots but the boa function outweighs the negatives and they’re warm and dry.
In all of the coldest trips I’ve ever taken the most vulnerable thing is always the fingers especially those first years on the Apex without the Yamaheaters. I’ve been pretty happy with my Klim fusion gloves but when it’s just too damn cold you need gauntlets.
I like the look of the SE windshield on the winder but I’m afraid that thing with would direct the wind right at my neck so I have a viper medium sport on my sled and it offers good protection.

You aern’t kidding Steve. That medium height windshield(DX type) which actually looks like a tall makes a HUGE difference on those coldest days. It keeps that cold wind away, anything shorter is noticeably colder huh.
My helmet face shield does leak a very little bit, but behind that windshield none was felt during the coldest part of winter. Once that I trimmed inches off the top, my small leaks did become apparent on cold days. But it is still nothing compared to that short freakin stock windshield. One needs to trade off with his friends warmer set up sled, just to be able to ride on even not so cold days. With that stock windshield even the best helmets out there(Doo) are not enough, same with gloves. My buddy has better helmet and gloves then I, but after 15 minutes he is ready for his Apex, just brutal!
And I am not talking Canada cold. Much difference from Maine to Canada.
We tried riding in Canada( St George) first thing one morning quite a few years ago. It was -38F and nothing kept you warm while riding. Made it to the first club house, 12 miles away. Frost bite sets in too fast at that extreme. From that time on I need atleast 0 F to ride. Maybe that is where all the Klim garb and Doo helmets shine.
Good thing the windshields only take 10-15 minutes to change out.
