As many know, and many more will evenutally find out, the plastic steering bearings that Yamaha uses are problematic. When the grease wears or washes away, the plastic wears quickly, which leads to sloppy steering in short order.

While there are some VERY nice solutions from the aftermarket, there is also a little tidbit that Yamaha forgot to install in the stock blocks that will help with the longevity of these parts. Grease seals. The little plastic bushing are molded to to take two split X ring seals... yet Yamaha was nice enough to leave them out. These grease seals should keep the grease in place inside the bushings for quite a bit longer, thus reducing the wear.

Required for this. (2) -214 X rings per steering block. If you can't fin em' locally, drop me a PM.

A quick slice with some sharp scissors or a razor will split the rings so they can be wrapped around the steering shafts, the bearing blocks are then placed back over them and bolted into place. The -214 X-rings are just about perfect. Here is a picture showing how the X-rings fit into the blocks.

Steering bearings blocks are Yami part# 8FA-23812-00-00 and retail for about $2.50 each.

Enjoy!

Does it matter what year or model your Yamaha sled is, just curious if my 08 would be like this as well?

No, it dosn't matter, all sled years use the same piece... Just about all sleds use at least one. Your Apex has three...

grrr...wish you had posted this before we put my brothers sled back together. there was a good bit of slop in the steering column and side shaft bushings. i knocked a little off each one with some emery on a surface plate and we reinstalled them with aircraft moly grease. not the best fix but did tighten it up pretty nice.
