so for this season i was going to install a cobra track and 1.452 studs (144 center only) in it. after talking with a friend he suggested for our riding conditions here in western ny to run a 1.5" track with no studs instead. he has a 2005 rev x 800 with a 1.5 ripsaw on it and says he has absolutly no issues with it hooking up. im confused here now. i know the apex puts down alot more torque than a doo 800. thoughts? pros and cons?

Snow conditions play a big part to the traction debate. I believe western NY is all about Lake Effect Snow so most days you would have loose snow conditions? If so, then a 1.5" Cobra track would give you better traction than a 1.25" studded rip saw. That is, your snow conditions are more like mountain conditions in that you have large amounts of loose snow where studs don't get anything to grip into and therefore are less effective. If most of your days is spent riding hard pack or icy trails, then a studded track would provide more traction.

thanks yeah are snow is based on mainly lake effect. the clubs do a nice job grooming our trails so they do get hard packed. my freind runs a 1.50 ripsaw on his rev x 800 with no studs. i just dont wanna buy the 1.5 cobra and then needs studs too.

You might have big problems burning up slides running a 1.5" track on mainly hard pack with a Yamaha. If you are running mainly hard pack, I wouldn't go any taller than 1.25" lugs

New york gets alot of snow.. but its not the mountains there..
I would not go 1.5, i would go 1.350.. there is really hardly any difference between the two.. and either way i would stud it,, and there wouldnt be enought room to stud the 1.5 track..

its mostly farmland around here. we dont have the wide open hardpack trails as other states or canada for that matter. fields drift over. groomers break down, or they just dont groom sometimes.(they are getting better though lol). di d anybody like the ripsaw track on their apex? my buddy is really leaning me toward the 1.50 ripsaw. he says he loves it and woudnt run anything else. but he is also on a rev x with an 800 in it.

This thing is litterally a million times better than the ripsaw. Can you say, no damage and no ripped lugs??????, unheard of from any ripsaw......
Also, the performance is just incredible from the ripsaw

The rev x has a better approach angle and a 16" wide track that allows for better floataion also much lighter sled. I found my apex got up ontop of the snow better with the paddle of the cobra. The ripsaw would plow through the snow but that was the stock 1 1/4
