Studs, ice attak or ice ripper XT....

Ok... it rained, then freezed over big time, and the trails are rock hard...

My Apex LTX was spining instead of moving forward....

And the slides just stuck to the track..

so i'm not set on
-studs: cheaper, more aggressive, but in time can damage radiator,
-Ice attak: one inch but aggressive and more top speed, fully clipped so less sticking to slides
-Ice ripper XT.. : 1.25 inch so more umph in snow, but less top speed..


What do you guys think?

Studs for traction and install slp anti wear pads to keep the hyfax from sticking to the closed windows.

I would get the Ice Ripper XT or Ice Attak. I wish it was an option when buying a sled. With studs I'd worry about punching a hole through an exchanger...been there! I personally don't need the aggressiveness of studs either. I don't care if my track spins a little when accelerating.

I have a SXR which was horrible going up any sort of icy hill. I put a Ice Claw track on and it just climbs up now. Not as good as studs, but good enough.

I would install one on my Attak but the cost of spending 500+ bucks to replace a perfectly good track offends me!! My sled is turning 10,000 miles this year so I'll be giving the track a good look see!!!

Ya... i know the price is steep, but i will get 200$ back for my track, and pay say 700$ .. so yep...will cost 500$ but studs will cost neer 300$ so just a 200$ diff....

I ran an ice gripper track on my 40th Anniversary LTX and wouldn't recommend that thing to anyone. I have studded probalby 10 sleds and have never run one through my heat exchanger. Make sure you install correctly and keep them to 1.325's for length and you'll be fine.

It isn't only studs you need to worry about; a buddy put a rock through his front exchanger at the TY ride on his brand new FX Nytro. Fortunately he had his wifes sled to ride the rest of the time we were there.......

It didn't grip worth a crap. Maybe helped some with stopping but definately no help with traction for accelleration. It might be OK for a lower HP sled.

Iceripper XT sharpstud. I want one for my Turb Cat too! I don't think these guys had the sharpstud XT. The Sharpstud works much, much better than the old iceripper with the worthless short dull studs. Studs rob top speed. A track studded with 144 studs will be down 5-6 MPH next to the Iceripper XT. Just don't expect it to be a drag track on ice cause it isn't. It's a trail track and that is where it excells at.

That makes it a no brainer. Sharpstud XT iceripper for the Quebec trails and you'll be VERY happy. You just won't be drag racing on the lake ice.

I have the ice ripper on my sled and it is better than my dad's stock ripsaw, but it does not provide the traction/confidence/safety that I'm looking for. I have never lost a stud in all of my past sleds, either. All of my past sleds have been studded and I hate riding without traditional studs. Just crossing bare ice while driving straight with a constant throttle the rear end slides out to the left.....

I rode on icy corners last week up in tomahawk,WI (2 up with g/f) and we had to do a lot of leaning to keep the rear from sliding out. I was not driving crazy, but riding with single male riders, so we weren't going slow, either. Loved the 13mm sway bar and C&A razors with 10" carbides on the front.....few times the inside ski came up, but I was riding 2-up, afterall. No problems with either yamaha (dad has '06 apex er).

Go with traditional studs. If it's not fast enough throw some nitrous or forced induction on it. It gets to the point that he who has the most money wins.....we just have to live with that. Our 4-stroke wasn't meant to beat the 1,000 cc 2-strokes or the forced induction larger cc 4 strokes. It is getting to be an outdated sled that is VERY reliable and holds it's own. If you want to be top dog, buy a used '06 apex, throw forced induction on it and you'll whip the turbo cat for what he paid for it stock.
