Supercharger questions

MPI charger...be careful

I installed a stage 2 on my mountain Apex last year, I had issues with always playing with the fuel box at higher elevations.

Also, the service at MPI is the worst I have ever had.....been waiting for my stage 2 pullies since I installed the s/c last Jan....
They keep saying next week....next week.
Ive had it with them!

In my opinion, I wouldnt run anything but a Alpine front mount.....they rock! turn the key and go oh and turbo lag.....doesnt exist.

just my 2 cents...

spray 25, Yes that is so true. The turbo will maintain boost as you climb. In the midwest flatland we stay at a fairly consistent elevation. I like the fact the turbo has a much wider powerband also. I too am waiting for CPR to come out with their kit for the EFI machine. That EFI is a little hurdle that needs overcoming yet. I here from some the MCX has it perfected. Yet I see quite a few warping headers, and I just don't want all the noise and the filter in the back with all the snert flying around in the track area from our midwestern trails with a rear mount.

The headers that Yamaha chose to use on the 06 Apex's are very thinwall titanium, the header distortion "issues "you are referring to are fixed by going back to the original stainless design .That doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the mcx kits. I have one of the first few kits sent out last year , and it's been perfect from day one.Only problems I had were trying to get it clutched so it didn't hit the rev limiter.

I like the alpine to for the mountain its awesome, I wish they would spend a bit of time for the flat land guys. Come up with a decent muffler system and a better intake system and I will be first in line.

Wonder why so much fuss with MPI they were awesome for us to deal with.

Ya, I really liked the HP my alpine/powderlites made last year. Dave was great to work with too. The install was time consuming! Problem I had was with shipping issues over the border. The customs people SUCK! They don't care about delivery times, UPS did'nt help things here either. MPI has been great so far with me on the supers. Mike Knapp#17

Its a tough call ont eh Phazer Frees-tyler...The turbo's seem to be pretty clean on the Phazers especially the Mc Xpress unit!

frees-tyler, I've always been a turbo guy in the past as many of you know. These new machines with EFI are not leaving much room under the cowling for a front mount however. For my needs, it has to have a stock, quiet sound to it, I also want to have the air cleaner in the front of the machine, not under the tunnel. I also don't want any lag. Those things right there would eliminate a rear mount as far as I'm concerened. It should be noted that I have not tried a tried a rear mount on a EFI machine. I'm told they are much better with the EFI now. I made up my mind with the RX-1 that I would never have another rear mount. I was taken back but the quick, clean install with the MPI supercharger for the Apex. I wouldn't hesitate putting the supercharger on for one minute. I see your from Canada, is there a powderlite/alpine available yet for the phazer? That would be my pick if you didn't go the MPI supercharger route. Logistics is everything when you start shipping over the border. Good Luck, and let us know which way you decide to go. Mike Knapp#17

Mike,
Can you trail ride with the SC stage I on pump gas?
MPI recommends the 50/50 mix with race gas. This isn't real easy for trail riding. Are you a trail rider as well?
Dave

I'm a former racer and now run a dealership...I've been reading and researching the topic and see there are so many "turbo vs SC" threads that it gets confusing. I simply want to offer some form of boost for my customers that is proven and reliable on pump gas. We are located in western Canada which is where Alpine is from so they are easily accessible. I'm intrigued by the MPI unit just based on the fact it doesn't require cutting, drilling or altering the stock sled nearly as much as a turbo install would. I've had several inquiries about SC'ing Rhino's thus I need to make a decision :o| lol!

Thank you to everyone for the input and sorry if I highjacked this thread :rocks:

You didn't hijack the thread. You asked some of the other questions I had.

I'm a flatlander, and am thinking the SC will be the best option for me.

PeeWee, yes I trail ride more and more now that I've backed off from racing. Having a blast with the Yamaha four-stroke too I might add! Yes, I'm adding a MPI supercharged Attak to the fleet this winter. Plan to run the 24-24 pullys at 9-10 lbs on pump fuel (92 octane) at about 1300 ft elavation. I'll slot the ign. pickup sensor to back timing down 3-4 degrees though. Also will have 2 Rages set up with CPR turbos running 9 lbs on pump. The carbed sled still have room for the front mounts and the carbs tune nice for us flatlanders. No worries with throttle chop and loud blowoff valves on the trail. The MPI installs so nice on the EFI sleds without the heat worries and cool downs required with turbos. To run many miles with pump fuel and you can't run the big boost anyways. Big power and boost the mountain guys talk of can not be used on the trail if you you need to refuel.

Mike is 100% right here. Good selection on setup same as mine! I did however add a BOV for this year.
