What exactly does a sway bar do and how does changing the thickness of the bar effect performance?

It is a spring that ties the two sides of the front suspension together. Stiffer swaybar (thicker) causes the two sides to react more together and gives you a flatter feeling, BUT, it makes the ride stiffer.
