I picked up a holdover 162se last fall and now have almost 800 miles on it. Coming off an apex mtx this nytro rides terribly and am considering selling the nytro and pick up another apex. Maybe I'm too big since I'm around 260 with all my gear on. I like the nytro in the trees and the weight is easier to handle than an apex but I can't get past the back pain. We run trails pretty hard to get to our play areas so I really like the stock durability. So any input on an aftermarket suspension would be helpful.
Is it the trail riding that's getting to your back, or something else? Lots of guys your size or bigger running the Nytro. What psi do your have the front, center and rear shocks set at now?

It's mostly the little stutter bumps that get me or even a little finger drift thats frozen that really kill me. You know how tight corners get those stutter bumps well any bump like that almost feels like it has a square edge to it. There seems to be a rocking motion that gets me too. My M7 had that and getting a taller seat seemed to put me above that rocking motion and rode better for me. I tried the 60 50 140 settings but seemd like I could bottom those out. As far as pressure settings go the skis are between 50 to 70 psi 60ish seems best. The center shock I started at 50 but was trying a suggested 100psi and that seems to be way better the best is around 90-95psi. The rear shock is at 150, 140-145 is a little too soft. Also I have the alternate transfer blocks on the rails.
A change from 50psi to 100psi on the center shock is a pretty dramatic change.
The higher pressure in the center shock could very possibly be what is transferring those stutter bumps into your back. I run mine at 65 front, 60 center and 150 rear and love the way that it takes the bumps. I'm a little lighter than you, but I would suggest letting a little air out of the center shock.
My rule of thumb is to never make more than a 10% change in air pressure and then see how it affects the ride. I also try an make sure that I ride it under all conditions before I make another change.
Another addition I would suggest is the Simmons Gen III Flexi ski. It handles bumps ( flexi-ski ) better than the stockers and has performance gains across the board for trail and off-trail riding.
Third, while it may be a shameless plug, look into the steering post relocator that we make. It flattens out the sweep of the handlebars and we have had a number of people comment on how the Nytro is less fatiguing to ride with the steering post rotated forward.

yeah, 5 PSI in a shock is a big impact...remember Air compresses on a non linear path...in other words, you can feel like your bottoming out with an air shock with only 10 PSI difference between bottoming out and not bottoming out...
So, with what you have said, I assume you have a timbersled Skid in it...and with Boost, I was only running 85 PSI in front shock (of skid) and 150 in back...
It is also possible if this is a used sled, that the shocks need to be rebuilt...have you done the zip tie trick to see what you are getting for travel?

Thanks guys I'll try those pressure settings, the center shock at 90-100 actually seems pretty high.

mtdream was running a Timbersled skid at 85psi in the center shock, not an SE skid. Your settings on your SE should be a little lower than his.
I put a SE skid in my 09 Nytro this season. I went with scmurs' recommendation on the PSI settings with 60 and 150. It worked great for me. I'm about 200-210 with gear as comparison.
I also have the relocator and have done some trail riding in NW Wisconsin on pure washboard and I was beyond impressed with how it handled the bumps and how I wasn't sore afterward.
I have a bad back and compared to my old summit and even the stock 153 suspension the SE skid has been a great change for me.

Sorry to bump this old thread up, but i have the same issue. Got an 162 SE and it's the worst ride I ever have on a snowmobile when it come to hard packed trail. My old VK 540 was more confy than that rock! I now it's an mtn sled, but sometime i must ride near 60 miles to get to the riding spot.
What could solve this? Shock swap?
