The TOTALLYAMAHA SNOWTRAIN TRIP(Canceled)

I can plan a route to pick up as many sleds as I can. I can't seat too many people in the semi, but I just remembered a friend of mine who has a tailgating bus we may be able to use, if we wanted to. Since I am probably one of the southernmost guys, I can make my way northward and pick people up on the way. We have some time to plan this out I think, but it may work pretty good given gas prices.

That would be cool, now if you can back track threw lower Michigan please! LOL

It shouldn't be too tough to plan a route that will be the most cost effective for everybody, so once the reservations are full and there is a list of people and locations, I'll look into seeing if its feasable. Chicago is only about 3 hours from me, so going towards Chicago, and then north may be a logical route. Time will tell, I'll stay up on it.

nate, make sure you are licensed and bonded for canadian border crossing for tractor trailer transport. also, you will need all documents for all sleds and permission from the owners as well. if not you could have some big logistical issues at the soo. ski

Good to hear that TYers are planning this trip. I’ve been trying to organize an Ontario ride the past couple years, which seems something always comes up and only a couple of us do it. If this ride is a go, I will time it that a few of us will meet maybe around the Hearst area. If it were me I would unload before Hearst since the slow trail goes by allot of good riding along the way. I’ll have my truck and trailer in the area and also know allot of people in this area since I grew up here. I know allot of remote camps in the middle of nowhere that would make good stops along the journey off the main trail systems. Willing to help any way I can.

That actually is a great thing Nate, but for me its 5 hours to Chicago or 5 hours to St Ignace. So at least for me I would just head north and hook up with you guys up there.

I hope this works out though!!

I will definately need to look at where the ride starts, and all that. Currently, I don't cross the border, but in the states, there are things we can do for private use. I wouldn't pass this trip off as a "for proffit" haul, but for a non-proffit, club type use, there may be some flexibility? if there is anybody who reads this that crosses the border who has info. I would appretiate it. Even if there are permits and rules, I can get temp. permits and insurances just for the trip if I need to, we do that from time to time now when we leave our normal hauling radius.
I'm sure everybody who is going will have the paperwork for their machines, and I can take care of the truck.
Is there anybody who has a # for a border crossing station that I can call to get the necessary info??

I know alot of guys from my town who have done the snowtrain and say its alot of fun. Seems to me they would take the train all the way up and then ride their sleds back to the Soo where they left their trucks.

snowtrain

A T.Y. Snowtrain trip is a great idea, especially if you've never done it. It's expensive,(now that the exchange isn't that great!) but well worth it.
Been going up there the last couple years with the SNOMADS SNOFARI CLUB - an excellent club in S.E. MI with ALL types of groups & riding , fast /touring/ on or off trail ! lots of pics of the area on the web at
www.snomads.org

click on photo icon, then to 06/07 season to see train shots. The ONTARIO snowmobile assoc was videoing for their advertising on the train, some of us can be seen on their ads. This year we rode out of WAWA for a week(over 1,000 mi) in march, lots of pics on 07/08 page, but we did not do the train.
Trails in that area are always fast, wide (mostly), smooth, with lots of elevation changes. lots of areas for boondocking or lake running . be careful on the magpie! 2 rules in CANADA, don't ride at night & never pass gas ! (especially at Halfway Haven !)

Why no night riding?

To far between stops or am I missing something obvious.

Yamadoo

Yamadoo, They groom at night and it is illegal to ride. This allows safety for the groomers AND time for the grooming to setup. This is what I was told on our trip to Wawa .
Dave

first i ever heard about it being illegal to ride at night. used to do it all the time. now i only do it when i have a buddy along. it is just more likely you will meet a groomer in the dark and we have some scary corners to meet groomers in.

the ring trail here is groomed 24/7 with the branch trails getting done as needed. gas is more the problem when riding at night as most small town service stations are closed by 9pm.

it is not illegal to ride at night in ontario. they dont suggest alot of it especially in northern ontario where civilization fuel stops and help are few and far between. where you are going is considered northern ontario, and wilderness riding. IT IS NOT THE U.P, OR LOWER MICHIGAN, WISC MINNESOTA WHERE THERE MAY BE A TOWN EVERY FEW MILES. SOME OF THE FUEL STOPS APROACH OR EXCEED 100 MILES ONE WAY.

also THE biggest deterant for night riding is, it is alot colder up there after the sun goes down. in some cases you can lose 20-30 degrees within the first hour the sun goes down. it is not uncommon to see -25 to -40 faranheight (real time temperature, not windchill) over night.

prepare for this cold by having fully serviced and charged batteries for the 4 strokes, maybe even a engine coolant heater. also BUY A SET OF GAUNTLETS! they may look dumb, but with save you from frostbite. yes that is a very real thing to get up there depending on weather.

you may be going in march but, it still can get very cold up there at night. be prepared, or you will have to buy items on the trail at great expense. ski
