Time for annother should I buy an Apex thread

I agree that they are not terrible in deep snow - at least with my 1" Predator.

When the guys I ride with decide to play in deep snow, I always join them.

The only thing I find is if I carve at too much of an angle that there isn't enough track to do a good job (with a tight carve, it keeps slowing down and I have to pull out of it). I still haven't got stuck once this year and with all the deep snow I've spent many, many hours playing and carving in very deep snow.

The stock skis though are terrible in deep snow and I find with them installed it is 90% body english, 10% steering that gets you around in the deep. Once the snow is more than about 20" of deep soft snow, I always steer in the opposite direction than I want to go and get the sled to lean.

About a week ago, we were playing in a field with about 3+ feet of deep snow and I traded back and forth with a REV-XP and to my surprise I was able to carve better with my 07 RTX than with the REV-XP. I don't know why, but I just couldn't get the REV to lean enough to really carve and I found the REV unstable when carving. With the REV it was all or nothing (ending up on its side); with the RTX I could control how far I got it to lean. There were no other Apex with us that day - just my RTX and a REV-XP so I couldn't compare the 1" Predator to the 1.25" Ripsaw.

BTW, I'm still not very good at carving. I can do it without getting stuck, but I haven't got the smooth graceful carving ability that we often see in sledding videos.

I consider myself to be good at carving. I almost always turn the oppisite direction. I have several friends with REV's and several friends with other different sleds. The only friend I have that can carve as good as I can on the Apex has a 05 switchback. I can out carve REV'S all day long. They dont balance like my Apex does. I can't wait until next winter when I get the 1.25 Predator with anti-ratchet drivers on!

Wow lots of good stuff here, I wish I would have looked at this site when I had my SRX, and XTC. I think I can make my decision based on the info provided. I'm really shying away from any Mono skid sled (Attak, LTX) No offense guys, have known too many braking rear skids so the 136 is out. I figure if its a horrible trencher I can get the Hartman kit. Also the spring riding conditions here (Alaska) in the mountains may be unlike anything out West or other places you may have been. The snow will really "set up" with winds and warm temps. Sometimes a hard base with 3 or 4 inches on top, so a 121 can be very usable (all Ive ever ridden in the mountains last 20 yrs.) Am I highmarking my buds on mountain sleds, no but I can get almost anywhere they can , maneuver better in the trees and still be able to do some seriously fast river riding in town. Think I might have to do it, price is right, cant be any worse than my SRX was in the mountains (short travel suspension=hung up running boards in powder=stuck).
Cheers.

hope your happy with your choice, one word of warning- one push of the fun flapper you'll be hooked on the apex for life :4STroke:

i suck at carving so far, everytime i try I end up staring at the sky, i'll figure it one day

Hey AK Yammy, if you want to do a little test driving let me know, I'll let you rip around on my Attak before or after you ride the RTX and see what you think. You shouldn't count out the mono before seeing what it will do. I've only got 1700+miles on it but it's been through many ditchbanging sessions and lots of jumble ice. I worry more about the A-Arms way more than the suspension. I believe top end is better on the Attak too. The clutching and gearing seems to be spot on.

Oh, and for you guys talking about deep snow and carving, here's a quick look at what us AK boys are talking about. The event in the video is where 16,000+ people gather for 1 weekend in April, and a very popular place to ride all winter.

Ok it's all Bashleys fault (Joking of course) I thought I was set on the RTX but maybe considering a Mono 136 what do others think of the mono skids, are they able to hold up with the nasty stuff as well as an RTX? I'll have to pay more for an Attak but might be worth it in the long run. Bashley I'm off to work for 2 weeks but will try to track you down when I'm done. Thanks.

Other local dealer has same price as Anchorage now on RTX $6995. Could they be clearing these out for something special in 09?????
