TIPS...First Oil Change.

Hi guys... Just got my Attak in at 550 miles for the first oil change. Alot of you guys who have your dealers do this can save some $$$ by doing this yourself. Just a few things I noticed that may help out. Instead of trying to use a normal allen wrench for the airbox to throttle body clamps get a long handle ball end type. Make sure to get the breather lines all back on properly to the air box. You will need to remove the battery tray to get at the oil filter. This is sort of a pain but not so bad. Remove the lead to the starter,unplug the oil pressure sensor plug. This is zip tied with the starter lead. Unbolt the ECU from the tray and let it hang. Remove the relay and fuse by slipping them up off there mounts on the tray,there is also another zip tie on the bottom edge of the tray you need to remove. Now you can unbolt the tray and slip it out. The filter on mine was TIGHT, used a channel lock pliers to get it off. Also my engine drain plug was VERY TIGHT. You might want to use a high quality driver bit for this and a ratchet. The rest you can get from your owners manual. For the most part it is not to hard. Just kind of slow with the battery tray. The next time the filter needs to be changed is at 12,000 miles but I think I may do mine at like 5000 or so. Check your owners manual on how to fill with oil. It is kind of nice not having to worry abought adding oil now for the rest of the season.

Great tips, but why on earth would you say you won't have to add oil all season. Didn't you have an RX1?

I never added any oil to either of my Rx-1's an 04 & 05.

I hope the 06 is better, but most of us used oil. There were numerous posts about it.

Great tips, but why on earth would you say you won't have to add oil all season. Didn't you have an RX1?

Good question. I had the RS Rage last season and it never used up one drop of oil so my 1st yamaha 4 stroke experiance was very good. My brother had an RX1 mountian that never used any oil. I have watched my 06 Attak oil level for the 550 miles now and it has never moved. I very may well be wrong but it's a safe bet that yamaha has this worked out. Let's hope!

This is a dumb question, but how tight should the filter be? I've changed many cars, and always go 1/2 with a wrench beyond hand tight... Now I have heard this is wrong... What is the right answer for the Apex?

Don't laugh, it's the holiday season and I was too busy too change my wifes oil, so I brought her Camry to to Walmart. It leaked in my garage after and then I found out it is their policy that they do not use any wrench to prevent any accidents... Tell me what you guys do...

Don't laugh, it's the holiday season and I was too busy too change my wifes oil, so I brought her Camry to to Walmart. It leaked in my garage after and then I found out it is their policy that they do not use any wrench to prevent any accidents... Tell me what you guys do...

What I did was to put it on as hard as I could with bare hands. Than I gave it just a little bit more with a strap wrench. Like 1\8 turn. Not sure if this is the exact way but it seems fine.

Engine drain bolt removal

Slush Monster mentions the use of good tools for removing the engine oil drain bolt as it is TIGHT, can anyone tell me what is needed to remove it?

I'd look at my sled but it's in the trailer and the skid plate covers the access plate-would just like to be prepared for the first oil change.

I am scratching my head trying to remember what size allen screw that engine drain bolt was. What I used was a metric allen bit in a ratchet wrench, I think it was a 5 mm but not sure on the size. A regular allen wrench set will work as long as the ends are not messed up. Funny thing was my engine drain bolt was super tight and the oil tank drain bolt was not tight at all even to the piont of being loose.

On these little filters I tighten as much possible with my bare hands thats it.
