top end bog

Well, got it mostly figured out. Finally went away when I went with 160's and 1.25 turns on the air screw. I also dropped the pilots to 15's hoping to get rid of the hard start after turning it off but didn't get ride of it. Helped a little. I did install the carb coolant shutoff valves but I still have to lug the thing back to life to get going.

Todd, so where did you end up with your jetting? I'd sure love to hear the sound of the pipe. I really like the idea of a single pipe exiting into the tunnel.

I went out again this weekend in pretty nice pow.....gad burn top end bog was back....Really strange behaviour from my sled. Climbed good a few times then all of a sudden fell on its face. Had problems for a bit so turned the coolant line back on and it would work well for a few minutes. Then it would be hard to start and a few times just sat there and lumbered like it was really flooded. PISSED ME OFF. Got of the trail around 3 and went to Napa in Cle Elum after talking to a mechanic buddy about it. He mentioned that the glass packs that have the baffles that actually stick in can be more restrictive than stock mufflers.

So, we took a flashlight and looked in the glass pack and sure as $hit...the little louvers stuck in so much it was like shrinking my exhaust down to a single 1" pipe. So at Napa we bought a smooth bore Thrush glass pack and a really nice guy there (sledder) named Mike helped us weld it up and put it in. Today we rode again and the top end bog is absolutely gone. So, be careful what type of glass pack you get. It needs to be smooth all the way through.

I have been following this saga which seems like forever. I am glad you figured it out. I have lost sleep over these types of mysteries over the years.

Makes me wonder how we survived before totallyamaha.

That explains why you're at 160's and I'm using 165's.

You mentioned the Red carb springs....the only thing I notice now is that at WOT the rpms fluctuate on a long climb from about 10k to 9800. It seems a little to rythmic to be the track hooking up. Also, when I let off the throttle at the top of a climb there is a momentary small bog sound. It doesn't happen if I let the throttle off gradually, only if it drop it quickly to 3/4 or so. I was thinking this could have to do with the springs?

I tell ya, I had thought about getting a nos kit but after this I just want to ride the damn thing.

Yesterday I was out on the machine and I could hear it sputter in the mid range when it went by,then it would kind of sputter when it was at full throttle,so I pulled the tops off and raised the clip position 1 clip,so second from the bottom both shims on top, cleaned up the middle and the top pulled the revs up another couple hundred, elev 5000 ft, custom single pipe exhaust dumping out the bottom.
