I could use some advice guys.

I have a 04 Warrior. 3,000 miles on it. Works great. Best sled yet.

At the end of the season last year it started blowing a little blue smoke out the exhaust. Nothing signifigant and only 4 ounces or so oil usage in 2,000 miles last season.

Also i had to top up the Antifreeze 3 times last winter. The tank was empty each time.

Took the sled to dealer last week to be checked. [ I had advised them of the issues last spring. ] I asked them to do a leak down test, compression test, coolant system pressure test and look at the plugs. Also check for
coolant leaks and check oil for coolant contamination.

Results as follows;

Compression; 220 min 235 Max
Leakdown; 3 to 5 percent.
No visible coolant system leaks
No sign of coolant in the oil.
Plugs were fine.
Coolent system pressure dropped off between 10 and 30 minutes.

Dealer verified blue smoke from exhaust and low coolant level.

Yamaha rep came and looked at sled and authorized a top end rebuild.
This does not surprise me as I have had nothing but great support from Yamaha Canada the few times I have needed it.

Some of you may remember that this is the Warrior that melted my boots it ran so hot. [ However the overheat idiot light never came on. ]
I am told the Yamaha rep was concerned that there may have been some damage caused when the sled was running hot and felt it should have the top end redone.

I appreciate Yamaha Canada coming to the party but I am not sure I want someone tearing in to a sled that seems to work so well.

This sled is bone stock except for a rear exchanger that Yamaha supplied, the dealer installed and i paid for the protectors. It has not been abused.
I did add some Seafoam to the fuel at the end of last season. Other than that no additives for fuel or oil other than a little Isopropyl on occasion for the gas. Yamalube used season one and Yamalube Semi Synthetic, season two.

Are there things that I missed getting them to test?

Any thoughts on what the problem(s) are?

Do you think I should let them gut my baby and replace her inner workings?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

PS: The wifes new Apex GT is in. I think she is gonna like it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I doubt very much by reconditioning ur cyl head it will solve ur problem what they would do IMO is check head for flatness and grind valves and seats replace valves seals check valve adjustment but i think it has hydaulics under cams. If it usess oil its either rings sticking, scuffed or piston coulda shrunk or maybe evac system

I would not worry at all about a simple cyclinder head rebuild. I have had them done countless times on my old race bike. Valve adjustment maybe new rings and an inspection. All is very easy to do and will insure your sled is at tip top shape. Although your sled would run great for thousands more miles if you can get it done don't be afraid to do it....

Being its free let them have at it

Yes if it got i guess the valve seals could leak but they use the viton seal and they are really tough and usually last quite awhile time will tell peak at ur cyl walls if they let u and ask them to they will i`m sure if they see scuffing u may be in for a fight U said light nevr came on but it got hot HMM the puter ever been read to see what was the highest Temp

Thanks for the opinions guys.

I believe they plan to do the rings as well while the got her apart. They think the oil rings may be stuck or bad.

I am not sure if they checked the puter for max temp Daveyboy. I will ask them.

I guess I will tell them to go ahead.

I was gonna have to go slow while the wife was breaking in the new GT anyhow. Might as well break in another at the same time.

As an aside. If they only do the top end, do you think I will need to change the oil again after the first 500 miles after the rebuild?

Most definitly yes change the oil after 500 miles!

have bare cylinder head magnufluxed to check for cracks make sure to fix the overheat problem first as this is probally what caused the other problems with the motor if the overheating problem isn't fixed your problems will only repeat them selves and will make valve grinding and rings etc useless break motor in with a non sythetic oil owners manual should give you a certain mileage before you can use full sythetic oil
