Hey guys i'm new here, i just bought 03 rx1 10zev. It has a Camoplast ripsaw track on it 1.25. I have a few questions about studding it.
1) What kind of pattern do i want, im mostly a tame trail rider(new to snowmobileing this year).
2) the dealer i bought it from said i dont need tunnel protectors is this true?
3) Is there anything else i should keep in mind when riding this thing its new to me.
Thanks
andrew

Do a search to find pattern advise, there's a ton of it one here, but I would recommend 144 down the middle.
Unless someone took them off, your RX-1 should have tunnel protectors on it from the factory.
The only thing I can really remember from when I started out on my '03 RX-1 is watch it in the corners....if you haven't done any front in suspension mods, it is very tippy!!!
You're gonna love it!!! Your stuck now....it's an addictive sport!!!

What kind of studs/backers are the best?

Here is my setup, 144 1.075" studs in a 4-3-2 pattern up the middle. I really like the pattern for a 121" track and the traction has been very good. For durability, many use double backers but I think that is too aggressive for typical riders. There was no real noticeable change in turning effort which surprised me, but I also increased the weight transfer to aid with traction and lighten the skis.
With a 1.25" track, you would want to go with a 1.325" stud or something very close to that. Also, the pattern is not as crucial as making sure that you stagger the studs so that when the pattern repeats the studs don't all go in a perfect straight line.

i live on a lake the traction is very poor on the ice, plus im looking for a little better braking on the trails. I was told i should look at 96 studs is that too little for the power of the rx1?

Usually rule of thumb is 1 per horse power. 140hp RX1 then should have around 140 studs.
I put 162 up the middle on my Warrior with a 136" track. So far I love it.

I stick to the 1 stud per hp rule now. I ran 96 studs on my old XC800 121" and bent one almost every time I went out. There was just not enough studs to spread the load and weight so the few that were hitting the ground would take the grunt of it and bend or pull out. I added another 48 studs to the pattern and it made a huge difference in traction and longevity of the studs.abj87 said:i live on a lake the traction is very poor on the ice, plus im looking for a little better braking on the trails. I don't know what color your sled is, but I have two 96 packs of yellow Ultralite backers, which are the backers and nuts in one. Their purpose is to reduce weight and they look cool too!!! I originally got them for my Warrior, but I decided to go with black ones instead....
