Track Tension Adjustment on a Nytro MTX 153

Thanks Guys:

I am going to take a close look at the drivers and see how they are engaging the extroverts.

First step is to get the tension up to near spec, and then to rotate the track slowly to see how they mate up. Pretty sure its something in there is a miss....

I had some horrible vibrations last year that my sled did not have in prior years. It was almost always while pinning it WFO from a stop when the rear suspension would compress. I'm running 8-tooth 2.86" drivers and a 2.5" camo extreme. Track clearance is pretty tight so I thought it might be the drivers hitting but it still existed running the track really tight. I was stumped until it occurred to me this summer that the center ports on my track (running Polaris 155x2.5 extreme) were catching the track stop on the AC rear swing arm. I could tell from the wear on the center ports and the track stop kept bending on the BDX swing arm. I need to pull the shocks and cycle the suspension to make sure I can just cut off the stop on the swingarm and not cause any other damage. I'm sure it's not your problem since you're not using a center ported track or AC Float skid anymore, but I guess my point is that it might not have anything to do with track tension. I chased the vibration all spring and it wasn't until summertime when I just happen to be staring at the skid and it just clicked in my head.

YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! VIBRATION IS GONE!

After TWO years of trying stuff ... its gone. Did three things, and don't know which did it, or maybe all three together.

1. Tensioned track. 1-3/8" sag at 15 lbs (pretty much stock setting)
2. Rounded off the tips as per RX1MPete
3. Recrimped the PowerClaw original track clips and squeezed them from 31.5 to 29.5-30mm width which is the same as the Yami clips my dealer put on to fully clip track.

Took it out in 4 feet of powder today that dropped here in the last 2 days (unreal conditions BTW) and was in complete disbelief. Super quiet, and in fact much quieter than my XM.

Gotta say the old Nytro still rocks. I'm not sure which sled is the better performer in bottomless powder, the XM or the Nytro, because the Nytro was really, really ripping it up today.

Thanks RX1MPete, kennyspec and nitris223 for all your suggestions. Got me in pointed in the right direction.

Mike

Glad to hear your vibe is gone!

What cc is your Summit? Buddy has an 800 Summit 146 and says he will tear me apart.

He has been off the sled all winter so we haven't had the chance to compare. Maybe in a couple of weeks.

800...

I really doubt that he'll eat you up. I'm pretty unbiased as I like both sleds.

Hindle/Hurricane/PC5/Ulmer means you are competitive on power and clutching and with the PC track and AC suspension, you are lighter too which really narrows the gap.

The Nytro with lots of torque and a wide powerband is a perfect fit to the 2.25 x 15 x 153 track IMO. I have absolutely no problem keeping up with my XM in anything deep.

The XM has effortless steering but struggles a bit with a 2 stroke powerband and a 2.6 x 16 x 154 track. Simply takes more power to get it spinning, especially in slightly set up snow. I think much of the problem is likely the stock DS2 ski. It suffers a bit in the flotation department and tends to push thru more than float over the snow, which causes it to trench more at WOT. I ordered a set of grippers for it like I have on the Nytro, and I suspect that will make all the difference.

Put it this way....the Nytro is a beast....the XM more refined but BOTH are a lot of fun to ride.

My AC suspension is in my RX-1 M. I have that heavy stock 08 suspension in the Nytro. I guess it is the same suspension (other than the shocks) as an XTX but longer and with tipped rails. I am debating whether or not to do the Star suspension upgrade. I need decent shocks before I do that.
