I can't speak for everywhere but in Ontario you will need insurance and a trail permit. The permits are available for a season, 3 days or 7 days. Info at:

If your sled is registered and insured in your home province you should be good as far as plates go in any province. No difference than driving your car across the country. You will need trail permits for any place you ride that require trail passes. Most provinces provide short term passes for a lower rate than a yearly one.

I just got a new sled and want to take to the mountains. I will not have received the RIV forms in the mail by the time I leave therefore I can not get plates or insurance in time. Will it be a problem? Can i still buy a trail permit or cross the boarder with out insurance or registration?

Not familair with the regs there but didn't you get a temporary registration when you bought the sled. here in NL you do and you then have to wait for the permanant ones in the mail. I assume you bought it from a dealer. If you have no registration papers you will certainly have issues at the US border. Some provinces don't require your registration info to get a permit. At least here in NL you don't need one.

Yes to the first. No plates = fine no insurance = fine. No to the second. To cross into the US I'm pretty sure you have to prove its yours.
Anywhere in Canada you have to have plates and insurance to ride. Not sure about the US but last thing I would want to be doing is riding out of country with no insurance. That could turn into a legal nightmare!
