I was going to change the oil in my viper today, but after breaking my oil filter strap trying to get the filter off I thought I'd ask if anyone has any tricks I could use..thanks guys.

Screwdriver pierce and rotate.

i used a big channel lock. it was on tight! crushed the filter and started to tear before it came off.

channel lock makes an oil filter wrench which works very well. I have never had any luck with straps. The other think I use for my quads is a filter wrench cup.

Clean the can with carb or brake cleaner. Use a HD 1" wide rubber strap wrench and be sure it is plenty warm (hot oil and filter) as a cold filter can be very tough to remove.

My guess is that most OEM's put their filters on dry and extra tight as everything seems to be tough to do the first time.

As TD Max stated, the first time is hard but the following filter changes with the filter installed correctly (lubricated seal and tightened to spec.) significantly reduces the effort to remove. The AC guys have the same problem with their initial filter changes. A friend broke two straps and a 3/8 drive ratchet removing the first oil filter on his 1100 turbo!
