have a 05 RX-1 with CPR air kit and clutching, with stock gearing.
I can get the hole shot on just about all the guys in my group. But by about 60 mph by the stock speedo they all start to pull back up on me.
We always drag up to about 100 mph, by then most of the guys have past me.
So would gearing it down help me in the 60-100 mph range?
Thanks for any advice you can give me...
UPDATE.
I think it did help but just a little. We had a lot of snow but this week it looks like it's going to melt away. Just like last year.
It was hard to see any big deference going down just one tooth on top. For the first time My brothers CPR set up VIPER [ motor is stock] was getting just as good a hole shots as my RX-1. Now I could finally see just how much faster it is. By about 105-110 mph by the D.M. he is a good 3 lengths or better in front. I would say from about 40 and up he can pull on me.
I didn't race my other brothers CPR set up F-7 [ stock motor ] on this day, but the VIPER could beat him, but not by as much as mine. From what I seen, I would say the F-7 with a good hole shot would get me by around 2 lengths. The night befor I could stay in front of the F-7 up to 110 but I was getting a good jump on him out of the hole.
My friend with the 06 APEX [completly stock] appears to have more in the mid range then my 05 RX-1. We think his will be close to the others after he gets a clutch kit on it, to get the rpm down a bit.
Im not going to do any thing more to my sled, so it is what it is.
I will post how the APEX works after he gets it set up... Gary.

There must be something wrong with your set-up. My Vector eats stock vipers for lunch.

Lower gearing helps the BOTTOM END.
1 tooth on top is NOT enough for RX. 2 teeth is good, 3 teeth and overdrive is better, 1 less on the top and 4 more on the bottom and overdrive is best.
Something is wrong with the clutching. Check alignment, check RPMS, check clutch TEMPERATURE (should be cool). Note that intake kits and clutch kits are NOT bolt-on. Due to the differences between riders, sleds, etc., kit MUST be tuned for the specific application, otherwise it can actually make performance WORSE.

the apex should be beating you..
It has 10 more Peak HP.. and is 30lbs lighter..
The viper however should be seeing your taillights unless it has tripple pipes.. than it should be close
Sounds to me like the clutching is overshifting and bogging down the motor..

LB,
you say 23/42 is the best for the overdrive. Why is that? I dont know much about the overdrive of the clutching. I was also hoping to find out some information about gearing. I believed the RX-1 could be geared up but did not know how much. You said the 23/42 works well. Could you explain why this combination works the best. Does the gearing hinder the snowmobile in different RPM ranges, or does this set up get the best out of the motor with little or no side effects. Any information you could give would be very appreciated.
I would also like to thank all the peopleon this site for all the information you have given about this snowmobile. The set ups have always worked for me and I have gotten lots of great info off this site from many people. This site rocks

When I said, the VIPER is CPR set up, that includes CPR tripple pipes.
I think my sled is set up good, it has the updated CPR clutching. The RPMs run about 10.300 - 10.400. I dont think I can get anymore out of the clutching. I think the rest of my sled is also set up good. I dont want to go beyond the air and clutch kits. It looks like Im at a dead end...
