Hi, I'm new here but have been looking around for a while. I read that the price seems to drop when there is no snow outside. If this is true, than could someone please tell me what to expect as far as a used, medium mileage 2003 RX1?

Also, would it be a better idea to buy a salvaged sled and repair it? The reason I'm asking is that I'm only 15 and want to buy my own sled. This will be the first one I own, but not the first I've ridden. So is it too difficult to repair (skill or budget wise) for someone my age to do? Or is it just better to buy a sled in good condition?

Thanks in advance

Last year the summer prices were higher than the fall prices so every year is different. Just get teh best sled you can sometimes low price reflects low quality or problems.

I'd buy one in good shape. If they look beat and busted on the outside, the motor is probably waiting to breakdown. My personal opinion is that if your 15, The RX-1 might be too much machine for you. Most people I know that age are riding 440cc-600cc machines.

Yeah, I thought so too at first, but I have ridden my uncle's 02 Viper with no problem at all. I don't do alot of mountain and rough jumps and the like, more so trail and ALOT of open lake. I just like to have a little throttle now and then. I'm also considering an SRX, but I love the looks of the RX1 and the 4 stroke is a big plus because gas is.. well, over priced.

I didn't intend on buying a busted one, just pondering the idea of buying one that has some minor damage and repairing it.

Plus, I'm a pretty big guy for my age and (at least I think so) am fairly mature for my age. Wow, that sounds ego centric, but I can't put it a better way.

Just hate to see you spend the money on a sled that is known to be one of the heaviest and most powerful. It is your money though. I know when I was 15, I had a 1980 Arctic Cat pantera with a 500cc fan and I thought that was fast.

Yes, I understand where you are coming from. I don't mind the weight because I will be doing lots of lake and trail, like I said, so I won't spend a whole lot of time in the air. I don't really think I'll be doing much racing, it's just so that when my family and I go on longer rides together, I want to be able to go across the lakes at faster than the 80Km/h that others go.

In my opinion , not knowing you I would pick up a good srx , there are some good deals out there on them , I think they would be a good sled for you , still a performer and good on fuel . they are reliable and handle great .

I have both a rx1 and a srx . they are hard to compare , I cant say what I like more but I find the srx more fun to ride and alot lighter in the trails

Yeah, like I said, I was considering both. I like the lower price and similar performance of the SRX, but I can't help but think that the 4 Stroke is the better package for me. I think what I'm going to end up doing is trying to ride both and see which one I prefer.

I'd like to know which one has the better handling over bumps at high speed, because there are some rough trails over the lake and I'd rather not go flying off at a moments notice.

I would stay away from wrecks or bar motors, ect. Even a high mileage 4stroke that has been taken care of has a lot of life left in it. Then you can spend your money on handling and performance upgrades as you can afford it. I believe it usually costs more to rebuild that buy good used.

I have about 4500 into a 10000+ miles 03RX1 I bought my 15 yr old daughter. That includes wide front end kit, Pilot skis, Bender monoshock suspension, foam stuffed seat, and articulating riser. Basically it is set up in a rider forward style. It handles and rides great.

It was a good well taken care of motor and chassis. It had been used in Quebec only. We have had no issues, Being it is an 03, it uses a little oil.

I bought it near the end of last years snow check season. You will find many looking to unload to buy the latest and greatest at that time of year.

How much "have" you ridden???

Speed kills. Speed, a heavy machine and an inexperienced driver???....you hear it on the news every weekend.

I hate to be tough on you, and whatever I say you will think I am a dork...but here it goes....

I'm in my forties have ridden sleds, dirtbikes, atv's, dunebuggies, race cars and lifted 4x4's all my life. I started on a Rupp when I was in grade 2; then a 250 colt, then an ss440, then an srx 440, then an indy 500, then an xlt580.....get the picture?? Everything 440 and up is capable of doing 160 km/hr!

When the RX1 mountain came out I loved it; and love my Apex mountain even more...but I've watched guys who have ridden for years get on them...drive in a straight line and not be able to figure out how to make them turn..

On a motorbike we are governed by the speed limit. On an atv we go 30mph through mud. When you buy a snowmobile; the first question everybody asks is how fast will it go?? And whenever you pull up beside someone they gun it and challenge you to a dragrace.

Those people are crossing the lake at 80kmhr because at that speed they can see the terrain in front of them and can react fast enough so they don't get hurt....at faster speeds even if you see the bump, by the time you react it will have broken your back.

"It not the bumps that hurt you. It's the DIPS."

God Speed! Enjoy the sport....you've got decades of incredible design improvements to experience and thousands of square miles of Manitoba trails to experience. Be intelligent about it...Most of my buddies ride 500, 600, and 700's...we all get there at the same time.

Sticking with a four stroke, in as new, and in as good of condition as you can possibly find is your best buying decision....My old RX1 is out there somewhere---the last one who had it sold it stating it was in excellent condition. I had totalled it by hitting a concrete culvert and never bought it back(although I could have for two grand). He sold it for seven grand!! Buyer beware...if on the outside it looks dinged up...chances are on the inside it's a mess.

PS Buy a Phazer GT (1 yr old will be almost cheaper than an RX1), When the big grin leaves your face buy an Apex or one of the sleds newer then '06 with the newer suspensions, and better handling ergonomics....Skip right by the RX1.

Just my 2 cents....(I don't need the negative feedback)

I have an 03 RX 1 with 1750 miles and a new 1 1/4 ripsaw track on it i would sell for $3200, from what i see thats a pretty good deal. Might even go up if i have it next fall. Let's face it, these 4-strokes are awesome machines and will go forever.

Yeah, I take no offense to what you say, in fact I appreciate it. I'm looking for both sides of the arguement. I have a fair bit of experiance, been riding for a few years. I really have no intentions of jumping on and gunning it. I intend to take a lot of those "warm up laps" to get the hang of it. And I won't be going 150-180 on the lakes immediately. I want to know how to handle it first.

Also, I'm only going to go fast when I can, when the trails are nice and the lighting is good so I can see the trail.

I'm trying to take in all these things and be as responsible as possible. I appreciate your input. Does anyone know what the minimum you might pay in Canada for an RX1?

Just saw your post. I am very interested. Next fall? That sounds awesome as a time frame, because I will be working all summer to save money. Keep me posted on that. Do you have any more info or pictures?

I just sold my 03 RX1 to a 14 year old kid that cant weigh much more that 110. I have some very mixed feelings about selling to some one so young. I must of had a "good" motor in that thing cuz it was damn fast. But it was still heavy. I guess what I am saying is to be careful and try like heck to not let that MACHINE get away from you if you buy one. Honestly, I bet you would have more fun on a Viper. In stock form, they handle way better than a RX. Plus those sleds look bad azz anyways.

Well, I'm about double the weight of that kid, and 6'2". How did that kid get the money, I wonder. I'm having a hard time as it is to get together some money for a sled.

I see what you mean though, about not letting it get away from me. I will definently be trying to learn how the sled rides before gaining speed. Control>Speed, that's the way I've always been taught (Sp?).

How much did you sell it for, might I ask?
