I have a new '05 vector with 3 miles on it and no snow to ride on. I'm going on a bagger trip around the UP on 1/15-20 (assuming there is snow). The trip will be ~ 800-900 mi (Seney to Copper Harbor and back). I don't want to carry oil , filter and tools to do an oil change on the trip and I don't want to stop at a dealer along the way if I don't have to. Will it hurt to go that long before the first oil change?
I wouldn't do it. As you go across the bridge from houghton to hancock, there is a yamaha dealer right there, I don't remember the name, but I would find out a give him a call,if you make arrangements ahead of time he will most likely take care of you in a timely fashion.

I would get it changed , the first oil change is the most important .

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. If I have to have it done on the trip, they would be the place to have it done. Just hate spending what a dealer would charge for a simple oil change I can do myself.

Why not try to get out and get some miles on your sled before that long trip you have planned.
Not to alarm you but wouldn't you feel better knowing that your sled is functioning properly before heading out for a long trip like that? What if something goes wrong 5 miles into your trip? Then your whole trip could be ruined.

Are you really concerned? The filter will do its job for all the fine particles that will be produced from break-in. So you double the recommended miles... No big deal in my book. I would not worry and just get it done when you get home.
Manufacturers have to make some kind of recommendation, but it's not like something magical happens at 500 miles. I did mine at 750 miles when my Vector was new and I now have 2,300 miles with absolutely NO oil usage. I was in a similar situation as you on a long trip...
I wouldn't worry... just enough that sweet sled with a clear mind!

I would, but like I said no snow.

This was the kind of reply I was hoping to get. Any others that went beyond the recommended 500 miles without a problem?

The first oil change is important,BUT those extra couple hundred miles aren't going to hurt it.I think I was in the 800mile range aswell.Engines and oil today are not like they were 50 years ago DON'T SWEAT IT!!!I bet if you didn't change it till the season was over it would't hurt it.very your engine speed, run it hard, run it slow, just don't baby it but don't beat it either!

I am in a similar circumstance. Got 430 miles on my new sleds and going on a trip of about 850 miles in a couple weeks. No snow to make the 500 miles and don"t want to wait till I get back with 1200 plus miles. So I am taking mine in tomorrow for oil changes. I was going to do the Vector myself and take the Apex in, but decided to get them both done at dealer. Once the first filter is changed it doesn"t matter how many miles you go for the rest of the season. Just need to check once in a while. 10,000 miles for the next filter maybe a while at the rate the snow if falling around here.

Thanks Tork. I couldn't remember their name. I may call them and see if I can set something up in advance.
