- 08' Nytro RTX 40th Anniversary - Stretched
I read a thread on the Nytro board about a TY member installing a Viper snow flap on a Nytro and how it was longer than the standard Yamaha snow flap. This got me thinking as my snow flap on my 144" extended Phazer RTX has always been way off the snow. In addition to throwing snow and ice on my riding friends behind me, I never seem to have much snow in the skid. So I had Cannondale27 take a couple quick measurements for me as I know he has both a Phazer and a Viper.
I ordered a blue Viper snow flap from Port Yamaha. As always, Kevin at Port provides awesome service. I ordered snow flap #SMA-8JP77-59-BL on a Saturday and Kevin sent me an email on Monday that it was shipped. Port has Viper snow flaps on sale at $31 which was cool as well.
So depending on how you want the flap to look and function, you can move the Viper snow flap up or down a bit on the back of the Phazer. Since I was looking to retain more snow in my skid, I chose to mount it lower which may not be the best for looks. That being said, I had to drill new mounting holes which are higher on the snow flap support bracket on the Phazer than the holes used for the standard Yamaha flap.
In addition to the Viper snow flap being some 4" longer than the standard Yamaha flap, the Viper flap curves back towards the skid. Once mounted, the Viper snow flap is 8" closer to the ground than the standard Yamaha flap.
Mounted with (4) bolts, there is a bit of flex with the Viper flap. I am going to make an aluminum bracket to support the center of the flap and utilize the (2) center holes in the Viper flap that I inserted grey xmas trees to fill the holes. I also need to make up some spacers for under the center (2) hex nuts on the inside of the flap support bracket. The nuts are larger across flats that the narrow section of the support bracket were I drilled new holes.
I am also thinking about trimming the top side edge of the Viper flap so there is a radius that better blends with the flap mounting support brackets I made for the GYTR rear bumper. All and all I think it will work out fine and help keep snow in my skid for better hyfax wear. Let me know if you have any questions. G.B.
Hmmm, cant seem to figure out how to rotate the pictures below that have been uploaded and rotated sideways?

Would you have gained anything if you would have mounted it with the side protrusions up against the bumper?

Got 1 on my Nytro RTX, trimmed it a bit fitting the Skinz bumper & have a piece of tie down mat'l in the center.
Tried it to cut down on the tunnel icing along with an aluminum under tunnel 36" pipe shield, my buddies say they noticed a difference in the amount of snow I normally kicked up.
Sometimes it gets warmer and will actually flex outward more for some reason.

is that going to hit the ground when you ride? seems to me the viper snow flap is stiffer that ours when it makes contact with the ground will it flex okay?

I have to admit I wasn't crazy how it looked the way I mounted it even though I was looking for maximum length with the flap. So here is what it looks like with the flap pushed all the way up to the bumper. It does fit the Phazer much better this way. Although I will need to trim a little off the sides of the front tabs as the flap is narrower than the inside dimensions of the GYTR rear bumper. Not a big deal. Clearance to grab the rear bumper with your hands is a little tight but usable. The original flap was 14" off the ground, my first mounting position with the Viper flap was 6", and with the flap pushed up to the bumper the flap is 11" off the ground. I guess I will have to sleep on it and decide what I want to do. G.B.Would you have gained anything if you would have mounted it with the side protrusions up against the bumper?

It looks great on a Nytro but it does look like it hangs pretty low. I know the bottom 4" of the Viper flap is hinged but the rest of the flap is pretty rigid. G.B.Got 1 on my Nytro RTX, trimmed it a bit fitting the Skinz bumper & have a piece of tie down mat'l in the center.

I have had mine bent straight out more than once. Key is to mount it well. I believe you will be fine with it mounted against the bumper. That adds a ton of strength.

Might just be the angle that pic was, my sled only drops about 1" with my carcass on board.
It's defiantly lower compared to the Wife's stock XTX but contains snow better- especially if she's going to be behind me.
