Pretty crazy as you have to drop and roll the chaincase, Avid makes a kit. It's a pain.
I run a 174-2.5-16, trust me it is more than enough

your thoughts
I've read your posts and you've got your sled dialed in with the 174 but I'd like to hear some more riding characteristics from your switch? How does it carve, can you still cut a 15ft. donut, can you lay it over as easy as before? How about in the tight tree's can you maneuver around tight stuff carving from right to left quickly? I'm sure it has hendered the maneuverability some because of over all foot print but how noticeable was it?
I'm considering the switch but damn I can't lift the rear now when the pig is stuck let alone with another 14" of track.....LOL. I've a snow jack coming to help but would like to hear your description on various terrain's,maneuvers and conditions. I'm sure others would benefit from this also. Not trying to Hi-jack the thread just improve on the response of larger track questions.....

Well it does make it a bit harder to turn, but most of that I have dialed out with various suspention settings, BUT by far and away the best improvement I did for powder riding was to cut about 1/2 of the outside of the simmons gen 2 skis off, after I recieved a set of powder pro's from Carls cycle with there special mod for my wifes RMK and noticed how well they worked. I figured what the heck and took my gen 2's to the bandsaw. To say I was stunned when I rode it was a understatement. I can hold a sidehill for 1/4 mile with ease, and lay that baby over till I drag in the snow. Circles are no problem.
But I wil say that it takes about 35% or so more effort to do the same stuff on my Apex as my friends Dragon 800. I look like a pro on his Dragon. I can boondock almost without thinking a a very fast pace on the Dragon or a M8, the Apex you better really be on your game if you want to ride at the same pace.
All in all my opinon of the Apex is this, It is a great sled and I love it, BUT in order to really ride it you must mod the crap out of her to lose the weight AND it is a really poor choice for a beginning to novice rider. If you are a really good rider it will do anything you ask, but if you are not quite there yet it will bite you right in the #*$&@, bigtime. The Apex and I have had a very steep learning curve and there have been a few times that I wanted to just push it off a cliff and start over. But I am a very stubborn person and we worked it all out ...lol...
Now please remember we go into some really nasty places, and when I trench her in its a living hell getting that thing unstuck with the 174, first off because when I get stuck with it its stuck BIGTIME, like a 5' trench and by far and away it is the worst sled I have ever had to dig out and pick up, 3 guys minimum to break that tail out of the snow, full of snow track probably weighs 500+ pounds...I am 6'6" and 275, and not fat, but still a real pain. So you learn real fast to never let off the throttle in the stickey situations..lol... I have bent the handelbars over twice yanking on her to try to rock it free. I also learned the best way to clear a stick on a hill is to just roll her over, does not hurt it a bit and BAM you are out. If you don't like to roll your sled over, you are at a real disadvantage.
I also have to say that even with my crazy gearing and mods she really still is underpowered, you just need the snort with these things, figure my friends 09 Dragon it about the best set up sled I have ever ridden, holz suspention, full carbon fibre tunnel and hood, every weight loss piece known to man, 860 race gas only, race pipes, clutch spot on for boondocking, so its at 450 pounds full and ready to ride with 200 or so real HP. In order to do this with the apex you need 300 ponies or so. I have climbed stuff where I have her pinned with the skis 2' in the air and had to turn out, but boost cures all that .
Well I hope this helps everyone out, I love my 4 stroke sled and will continue to mod it and best of all It can take a hell of a shot and never ever has engine problems, the Apex is one bulletproof sled....
