Hey guys, counting the days until the snow flies like the rest of you. I am contemplating a trip to the UP for the first time this coming winter. I have never really been on anything but a day Snowmobile trip and and I know if I don't plan for it I will never make it happen. Wondering where and when I will find the nicest trails and where a good place to stay is? Time to do my research, Appreciate the replies.

Maybe you should join us on our Ride in Houghton Hancock in Dec or one of our many rides in Muni MI. There are so many great spots... Watersmeet Area, Rockland on the Western Side...

Sorry I didn't reply on HCS, but watch out facebook group once the snow flies. We have a group of 6-8 sleds that take off out of the FM area each January/February or so. Any one of us can give you some advice, but if you can read a snow report, you will find good riding.

I missed this years ride due to a funeral, but I know I missed a good one. Last year we drove from Fargo to Hurley, WI. Of course the first night we stay in Ironwood, and hit the Hurley-Gurley bars. Then follow that up with some Western MI riding. We then had reservations in Houghton. The trails ran all through town and across the lift bridge to the peninsula. We did one day on up to copper harbor. We then did one day of south range riding and on back to Fargo.

We put on 450 miles or so in three days. That's light riding for MI, as you can have 200 miles days when rolling 75-90mph! Heck we were did 90 miles on day 2 before breakfast in Copper Harbor at 9am!! We like to get up early and get the nice snow. I would rather ride in the dark in the morning on smooth trails, than roll back to the hotel in the dark on whooped out trails.

Grooming was happening all the time, so we never really found a sweet spot for riding other than early morning. If a person knew the out of the way trails, you could avoid the whooped out sections. The obvious central trails were beat up from traffic.

The guys this year rented cabins on Lake Gogebic I guess that was a blast as well. Hit up the guys on our facebook group if you want local help. My guess is it will happen again this year. But when the snow is good in MN, we have other options as well. But when the snow is good here, then MI has less traffic. When the snow is crap everywhere, then MI is a zoo!

Keep in touch.

Your best bet for good snow is going early to mid-January. Now with lake effect snow, it could be earlier. I've hit good and bad trails in February. And the bad was due to warmth. Trails open December 1st. Can't go wrong staying in Houghton/Hancock. Plenty of places to stay. Plenty of miles to be ridden!
