Great report. Please keep in mind, if your sled is not setup properly with any ski, you could get darting. Darting is a function of ski presure, not having it in the right location on the ski. You can eliminate darting by shimming the skis. Bergstrom Skegs has a great deal of information on darting.
I also think the ski-saver idea is a big help on a stock ski because that plastic sticks out between the keel and the bottom of the carbide and acts as a hook when railing and puts your keel deeper depending on the thickness of ski-save you choose to put under there...my skis and sled handles & steers so much better with the shimming and the ski-saver ..You can make your own "ski-saver" very easily with a piece of old hyfax! So in all the ski-saver is MORE than just a ski-saver it really can change everything about your stock ski ! IMO.

My RTX handles pretty well with the stock skis. It does dart, but that's the factory skegs more than anything else. I am just so much happier with my 2006 RTX compared to my '04 RX that, frankly, I am not in the mood to complain. It digs in well in the turns and the rear end is SO MUCH LIGHTER and more manueverable than the RX. Basically, this sled is easy to ride, stock. I went on trails yesterday on Tug Hill that I NEVER would've tried with my RX. I will wait a little while before I start getting picky !

We used Stud Boy 9"shaper bars on both skis and I'm trying the ice ripper track 256 picks in the rubber, tracks ok only put 300km+ this past weekend on it but my gut says not enough traction might drop 96 double backer pattern down the center damned toy budget is getting out of hand.
Set up is as stands rear skid-44mm sag rear shock, rebound 5 clicks back from max, transfer set at min. front shocks springs backed off to loose then tightened an inch not sure on that one off the top of my head. I would like to back the transfer back to med. but want the same settings for the other skis I will be sampling to make the test fair.

I have last years C&A race ski (bought it for the second year in a row). I get zero darting and with very little adjustment the thing corners like its on rails. It DOES steer a little heavier though (obviously). I was gonna try Simmons this year but C&A has kept my business through a ski that does what I want.

Which model do you have there is no race the list is as follows AD, ADX, Razor, Outlaw and XT. I found the Outlaw to steer a little lighter then stock myself.

You should try the Outlaws on the Attak & see what it felt like then!!!

That would be news I & many could use!!!

Good job so far!!!

Well gentlemen, I put the Simmons on my Attak and it changed the character and personality of the sled so dramatically, I could hardly believe it! It is now an absolutely incredible sled. It DOES NOT dart. It handles as well as ANY 136" track sled I've ridden, it DOES NOT push through corners. Everyone who rode it would not get off....including some REV riders. It is the best investment I have ever made on any sled. Two of my buddies, an Apex GT owner and a new REV owner, oredered their SImmons today after riding my Attak over the weekend.

One guy I rode with on Sunday said at a rest stop " I don't get it last week your riding in the back you change the skis and now your going 90mph and waiting for us."

Alot of guys talk about shiming, ski covers and double carbides but I'm willing to bet if they tried a high end aftermarket ski they to would be blown away at the difference.

I tried things one step at a time. Replaced the stock carbides with "shaper bars". Checked ski alignment. Shimmed the skis. Adjusted transfer settings. Then put on "doolies". Each step helped incrementally, but the sled was still "nervous"....

I left the shim and bolted on the Simmons and off I went to the races! Why I messed around with the other stuff I'll never know....I would have to agree with some other posters, the stock Yamaha skis are junk, at least with the new chassis.

APEX DARTING

I ordered Bergstrom carbides, ski savers and shims for all my Yamahas and I can't wait to try them. When the APEX was new, the first day it did not dart. The more miles I put on it ( now 300) the worse it gets. I swear it's almost unsafe to ride fast down a used trail. I was on Tug Hill over the weekend and the trails were damn good for the lack of snow around. The Apex was all over the place. I went back to camp and jumped on the SRX and there was ZERO darting down the same trail. Wierd, but I always heard that the SRX was NOT prone to the Yamaha darting problem.

Which Ski's from the start?

I just bought a new GT. No miles yet. No snow in central Maine yet. I am very dicouraged to hear all the negative feedback about darting, ski-lift, handling etc. I am seriously thinking of putting these Simmons skis on right from the start. I see that there are different models of C&A's .... what about Simmons and if so, which model ski should I be looking at? :o|

To the best of my knowledge, there is only one style of Simmons ski. Here's the link: http://www.flexi-ski.com/home.html

DO NOT worry about liking your GT! Remember, ALL sleds have issues of some type.....the supposed #1 sled in the industry (REV) is experiencing some real issues this year as well. Just take a quick walk through DooTalk for an eye opener.

After riding my own Attak and a buddies GT as well as a couple of '06 REV's and conFusions, Yamaha is at the top of the heap in this year's competition....it's not even close! ;)! I'll even go so far as to say this, if the only snowmobile I could ride was an '06 REV, I would SERIOUSLY consider giving up the sport! They now ride like doo-doo, vibrate like a cheap old hotel vibra-bed and offer the most uncomfortable riding position in the industry.

I decided to do a comparison today on my stock Attak skegs by running a loop with them and then installing Bergstroms skegs with shims . I was unable to use their ski savers because the 06 skis have a very deep keel .
The machine turned much easier and handled great
I must say the welding, placement of the bolts and lack of turned up ends into the ski on bergstroms skegs are rough compared to the stock skegs. But the machine is dialed in after 300miles and I am very happy

STEER LIKE A DREAM

First thing I did for my wifes' GT was to stud with 144 X 1.325 Woody's SS studs the next thing was to pull the YAMAHA skis be fore the hit the trails and install SLP SLT (Straight Line Tracking) skis with 6 inch SLP carbides. Just returned from Quebec and rode in pretty much all kinds of snow conditions. No complaints from the BOSS other than me not being able to soften up the suspenion to her light weight. I had a chance to ride it a few miles myself and was quite surprised as to how it rode and handled with 245 pounds on the seat. AWESOME

I'm quite surprised that the fellows that were invited to ride the new sleds never picked up on all the handling problems that are benig discussed on the site. I believe YAMAHA should have engineered the design to properly function with these out dated skis or stepped up to the plate and supplied ones the would properly work with this engineering master piece.
PS: Got to run my friends new GT in Quebec with the stock skis and scared the S_______ out of me.
