I went from a 22 to a 21 gear up top today. My tension adjuster is completely maxed out. It has nothing left, but it is finger tight. Is this cool for now? I figure maybe I'll throw a 68 tooth chain in it this summer, but just want to ride it right now. Not sure what tooth the lower gear is, because it is hidden behind the reverse gear. I also went to 70 degrees on my Hartman clutch set-up. It is dark here so I can't go to the mountain to test it right now. What sucks is I have to leave for Atlanta tomorrow morning at 6:30 for a week! If my top gear was a 22 stock, what do you think my lower is w/ reverse in it? Thanks guys!

Aaron

AaronBND -- Is Tom is aware you have reverse or is his intent is to gear you at 21/40 with a 70 chain. He would not recommend you to gear 21/38-39 with a 70 chain. You really need to confirm what gearing you have with him so there is no miscommunication. See remarks last thread same subject linked at the bottom of this post. It's important you two are singing off the same sheet of music here.

2003 parts catalog shows (reverse):

SPROCKET (38T8EU1) STARTING FRAME NUMBER RX10SH JYE83UOO73A000145 AND AFTER

SPROCKET (39T8EV1) STARTING FRAME NUMBER RX10MSH JYE8EVOOO93A000301 AND AFTER

Owners manual says 21/40

I assume I have a 39 tooth lower than. Cause the 70 link is maxed and it is a 21 on top. Is this gonna work Hammer? You know the mountains around here better than anyone. I don't need to go 85 miles an hour on the trails. I want to do good in the steep and deep! You in Bend or you live in Shasta now? Thanks for the advice.

Aaron

70 chain NOT a good idea !!!

68 chain IS a good idea !!! (make the phone call)

I'd gear it to 20/39 and spin the motor 10,500 on the flats no load and have it pull down into 10,000 under max load... 10,500 x 83.7% = 8788 clutch rpm and is still 86mph at 1:1 shift... (Note: My opinion may be different than Tom's and usually is hehehehe)

I live in Klamath and ride Shasta... Going to be out of town for the next two weekends, have to work the weekend after that, have one free weekend back in town, then have to work the weekend after that... Arrrrrrg !!!

Haven't ridden out of Bend for a couple years now (place is a zoo)

So Guys,
It sounds like at least the top (smaller) gear is interchangeable, and not reverse specific. I was trying to get this info in another thread, and couldn't quite word it right. Can anyone say for sure whether the bottom (larger gear) is different on sleds with a reverse kit? (i.e. only available in a few sizes). I see where MPI sells a 42 reverse specific gear that is outrageously priced. Also curious about how many miles on a gear/chain combo before the whole mess has to be replaced together?

Mark (in St. Thomas for the week, and missing my sled 8) )
Aaron, I slept on the floor in the Atlanta airport yesterday morning for three hours, dont go.

Thatspec -- You could go into the preferred vendor section on this site and ask Port Yamaha & Rich Motorsports, actual Yamaha dealers, about what came in the dealer reverse "kits" from Yamaha. I change the gear oil every season, the chain every third season just for peace of mind.

I just picked up a reverse kit with a 40 tooth bottom. I've been holding off till I could get close to the ratio I want. The top gears are interchangeable with the non reverse but the bottom gears are specific to the reverse. If you go on the Yamaha parts site via TY you can get actual part numbers for all the parts and you'll see then whats what. MPI is the only source I've found for a 42 bottom. Currently I'm running 19x42 with 8 tooth 3.0 drivers and the ratio is pretty good. I can get the same ratio with 18x40 but the 18 will put more bend in the chain which I've never liked but I guess if you change chains regularily it'll still be cheaper than sprining for the 42 bottom.

The part number for the 40t reverse gear is 8FB-47587-00-00 ,Ken.
