just replaced my track, want to install new studs, I really dont want to stud on the outside windows, was thinking going double , double every second window, that would give me 96 studs total, or should I go double, double every window for a total of 196, I think most sledders are getting away from studing the outside windows due to pull outs, what does everyone think. It is a 121 ripsaw single ply camoplast track, will it handle studs every window or am I looking at problems down the road.

Make sure you get studs for the single ply track if you only want 96 I would go 1 double every window. Arternate sides and move each set a little so they don't follow the same path.
121 track is as follows 2studs =96. 3 = 144. 4= 192.

Woodys has some studding patterns on their website...check out their ideas.

Personally I think 96 studs is too few and 192 is too many. Generally, you should have 1 stud per horsepower. Alternate between 2 and 4 studs per section of track for 144 studs total.

Too few studs will cause too much stress on each stud resulting in bending/breaking and track tear outs.

I had 96 down the center for 7000 miles on my 07 apex and thought it was a bit much in tight trails but never thought i would like more even in the up if i would have done a little maintiance on them i probably would not have had any pull outs as it was there was only one pull out and i broke 2 studs spinning the track on pavement once. I now run prestudded tracks and love them.

I had 144 in my '06 with a 4, 2, 4 pattern. On the 4's I used double backers and the 2's I used single backers. I only studded the inside belt. I think this pattern worked well for aggressive trail riding as it hooked well but still allowed a little slide.

I have 96 on my Vector and I am pretty happy with them, but if you have an Apex, and depending on your riding style, you may want more?

Just remember, the more studs you go, the more of an aggressive carbide you will need.

I use 3-2-3-2 pattern (120) on 121 great for trail riding or I have used 3-3-3-3 (144) on 121 didn't notice any big difference but seem to get more scratch lines then the 4-2-4-2 pattern IMO .

I used Woody's recommendations. They know what works well or not. I've had mine on for 6k and the track looks new still.

Every stud tear out that I have ever had has always been on the outside of the windows. I would stay in the center for peace of mind.

I had a stud tear out at the end of last season and I just replaced my track with an Ice Ripper XT. I have yet to try it but I am looking forward to not worrying about stud tear outs and damage to my heat exchanger and exhaust system.

going with 192 woodys grandmaster studs

going to try 192,studs, thats what I had on the last track and it lasted 12,000 kms, never had a tear out on the outside window, hopefully I wont have any on the new track with 192 studs. going with the grandmaster studs, seems to work good on my wifes 2012 apex xtx, still look like new and no issues. I think the grandmasters are less prone to pull outs from what I have been told. I dont think 144 is enough and I hate to put all that weight in the center of the track, anyway thanks everyone for the tech information, let pray for snow.
