I was climbing on the way back to the trucks this past Friday with Jonny Rocket. I screwed up and got bucked off and laid my sled on it's side while trying to climb a steep hillside.
With my old MSRX if I was really stuck I'd tip the sled over on its top and roll it into fresh snow.
Well, my RX-1 Mountain was more on the windshield than the side so I thought it would be easier to just roll it all the way over than to try to roll it back up the hill.
BAD IDEA!
After I rolled the sled over I saw oil coming out of my hood vents and said a few colorful words. Then I opened the hood and there was oil everywhere! The ECP filters and prefilters were dripping with oil and the sled was flooded (with oil). I assume it came from the EVAC kit oil line and right into the air filters. The sled wouldn't run with the air filters on so I had to run it back to the truck with no air filters but I made it.
Moral of the story is:
Four strokes don't like to be upside down (I knew this but now I will never question it again).
Learn from my mistake.

PS: Is there a check valve that could be added to the evac line to only flow in one direction? Wait a minute. The crank case pressure is evacuating from the crank case the same direction the oil just flowed into the filters from so scratch that idea. [/b]

That was my concern with the evac too, I just went with crankcase vent and mounted tight/high on the steering post. Upside down, no leaks anymore - first trip I had oil everywhere(moved the vent higher on the post)!
I have done that several times with my vector and oil never came out.

Dooman, could you please post a picture? You could even send me an e mail if you'd prefer at kempffers@omnicast.net
Yeah, the sled was only upside down for a couple of seconds and I lost over a quart of oil.
Any ideas are welcome

frostbite I heard about that from short track rx1"s also.I wonder what is different between the vector and the rx1?

Our rx1's are upside down all the time. Sometimes 5 times a ride. It's the only way to get them stuck quickly, alone. No digging required. A little oil runs into the bread box, but runs out the bottom into the bottom of the sled and out the pan. Never hits the clutch, never shows up anywhere but some spotting on the snow. Rarely do we have a problem starting. We never let the sled sit. We just flutter the throttle, wildly, till it catches and it clears right out. I can't even pump my thumb quick enough so I use my fingers. One time out of ten it will crank and crank and won't catch. Then I pump the fuel pump hose (one of them) with a nose syringe to prime the carbs and it starts right up. The oil loss isn't appreciable, and we always smell a little gas. Sorry, but it just amazes the heck out of me what people will put up with to have some cool looking filters on the front of their engines.

I roll mine all the time to get it unstuck as long as the snow is soft enough. never a problem

So you guys are saying it's a ECP (Or K&N) thing only?
If that's the case I think I can figure out a way around it. All I need to do is add the stock collection basin back into the system and there is no more straight shot to the carbs.
I'm glad to hear other roll their sleds over to get them out too. I usre hated the thought of losing that option.

mine is all stock under the hood so i would think it is indeed your ECP/KN

Mine actually continued to run straight upside down the other day for fully 30 seconds. I think it would of run indefinately until I shut it off. Floods when it tilts 90 degrees, 180 degrees seems to be fine. Slight oil staining on the foam filter after that (bone stock airbox).
I think its more to do with the way your Evac is set up than the filters themselves.

Wow....what an eye opener! I have been really close to buying the ECP's, but I gotta tell ya I'm not real sure right now. I have owned motorcycles for the last 20 years and have always been a firm believer in not messing with stock reliability when it comes to the engine and have had very good luck in never having any real mechanical issues. This just reassures me that the engineers know what they are doing on an engine that can run at 10,000+ rpm's for thousands of miles and not let loose! I think I'll stay stock! I love this forum!

i have rolled my sled a couple of time this winter with ECP and only a real small amount of oil get through the filter, just enough to get my and dirty.
but she didnt stay very long upside down.
Maybe it depend on what side she roll

I think the difference is the evac kit. It opens the crankcase up so oil can come out. I have had oil come out also. I have another vent line coming out of the head cover. That is where the oil came out. What we need is a ball valve of some sort that lets pressure out under normal conditions, then the ball would plug the opening if upside down. I tried a PCV valve w/o success.
