What should the monoshock be able to handle?

As some of you may know I have had a couple problems with my monoshock rear suspension (cracked arms, and slide rails). I am trying to determine if I am to hard on the sled or if there was simply a problem? Should I or should I not be able to pound through the mogels at a fast agressive speed?

I see the RTX has the mono in the rear, is it not the same mono as my RX-1 with the exception of the updated rails?

I do not want to do any ditch banging I just want to be able to pound though the mogels as fast as I wish.....

The 05 mono was far too weak for me. I even took it relatively easy all season trying to avoid big bumps, air time, and stutter bumps. Last season I went through 3 front pivot arms, one rear pivot arm (twisted when one of the front went), two slide rails, tons of idlers, one track (damaged when one pivot arm broke) and one shock.

This season with all of the 06 parts I have been riding the sled much harder (even harder than I used to ride my Polaris sleds) and it seems to be handling the workout perfectly (almost 4500 kms so far). I did reinforce the front pivot arm beyond the standard 06 setup as well as machined the inner idler wheel mounts to accept 04 style idler wheels - so it's should be a little more durable than a stock 06.

I think the biggest strength improvement is in the 06 parts though, not the extra metal I added. I suspect the 06 pivot arms may be made from stronger steel as well as having more material and bracing.

If your skid has been updated to 06 ams, rail, and bushings you should be able to ride it pretty hard.

I have been skipping over the top of 2 foot moguls at 70+ mph, launching it a several feet in the air 100's of times (track ~3 feet in the air), landing on many rough and hard surfaces, cornering at top speed while pounding stutter bumps, etc. Last season the skid would have broken at least twice by now with this sort of riding.

One thing I should note is my skid does not bottom out, even on hard landings. I might have touched the bump stops a handfull of times in the 4500 kms. I'm also fairly sure my shock is not stock (I'm convinced Yamaha or my dealer rebuilt the new one with much more compression damping - it works awesomely, but is very firm compared to last season). I also have the heavy duty spring with the c-clip in the 2nd positon.

MD - the stock 05 skid will have a hard time handling a beating from an aggressive rider. At the least, you should get the rail brace update with the different bump stops up front - they reduce the stress on the front arm when bottoming, this is the biggest addition. The addition of grease zerks is key as well. You should get the front two lower brackets that attach the front arm to the rails (they have grease zerks in them for 06). then you should be pretty safe to run it hard.

Check the bottom attaching points on the front arm religiously.

The front bump stops didn't change with the 05 skid updates (at least not with the recent, major updates). The 06 has different bump stops because the effective geometry is altered by the new tunnel mounting location at the rear.

My sled has a fully updated skid in it which includes all of the 06 arms, arm/rail mounts, rails, and rail reinforcements, but uses new 05 bump stops at the front, and a new 05 weight transfer assembly (06 is a different length). You might be able to use the taller 06 front bump stops, but Yamaha doesn't recommend it (at least mine doesn't have them and it's supposed to be a 100% updated 05 setup with all of the reinforced and improved parts included).

One additional "update" I made was to use longer full shank diameter bolts where the front arm attaches to the rail brackets. The stock bolts are a reduced shank bolt that isn't likely to load each side of the front pivot arm attachment points equally.

Thanks for the replies.

I am not even sure if I will get my RX-1 back or not as the insurance company has not made a decision yet. My rails were replaced with the 06's as the original ones cracked. My w-arm was replaced as well as it broke in about 3 places, I am not sure if the 06 version was put in or if the 05 was. Is there any clear way to tell? Atleast now I know I should be able to run my 05 hard with 06 parts or if they total my sled I can look for a complete 06 sled.
